favorite food
My wife and I are from the NE part of the state. I am from La Plata and she was raised in South Gifford. Try to find that town.
We moved out of state in 1961 but we and our sons love to get back for breaded pork tenderlion sandwiches. Of course they are fried!!!

I'm with you, Sheila! I'm gonna have to go to Mr. Yen's soon! Ya know, I suppose I could look up those recipes. Any suggested websites?

Hey, Bent! Have you tried Mondu? I don't know if I've spelled that right. My husband started bringing it home a few months ago and I'm hooked! If you have, maybe you can do a better job than I can of telling these fine folks what it is! Hahaha!

Missouri Memories

Anyone else have anything at all similar to that?

When I was growing up, my Missouri-born-and-raised mother used to break up cornbread into a glass of buttermilk and eat it! She also cooked tomatoes and added a little salt and some sugar and broke bread up into them and ate them warm. I didn't care much for them then but I've made something similar as an adult and it's actually quite yummy!
I just called her and she said that they often had that dish you spoke of...warm "sweet milk" with bread or sometimes crackers and sugar added. She said that living on a farm, the biscuits or bread in those days was almost always homemade. She added that her mother (my grandmother) called yeast bread "light bread", whether it was homemade or store bought.
She said that when she was growing up, the family would drive 10 miles into Columbia to drive up and down the streets to sell their eggs, butter and fresh produce and they would stop at the store to buy bread and lunchmeat or cheese and crackers and often sit on the steps of the courthouse to eat their lunches. We talked about how that must have been the closest thing to "fast food" in those days! Cute scene, huh?
That's one of the things I love about genealogy. I get to have these sorts of conversations with my parents. Thanks for giving me another opportunity, Voyager!

All these posts bring back alot of memories.... the bread, milk and sugar, the crackers and milk....the tomatoes and bread and sugar... makes me think back many many many years ago to when I was a little girl !! And hubby always talked about gooseberry pie. Never heard of it before. Found it a month or so ago at a little cafe in downtown Branson.... course he had to have it. HE can have all he wants..I'll stick with pecan or strawberry rhubarb!!

Yessss! Gooseberry pie!!! One of the things I remember most about my grandmother was her cobblers!!! She made every kind but gooseberry was one of my favorites! It may be an acquired taste because it is so tart but since I first had it as a child, I didn't know that! Hahaha! If I were to have it today, I would probably want more sugar! I only remember that her cobblers were tangy and sweet and her crusts were off-the-charts!!!
Gooseberries grew on my grandmother's farm so they were plentiful. She was only about 4'10 and was like a little roly poly. I sure do miss her! Thanks backatcha for the memories, jdslady!
So, did your husband like the pie? And if so, can you remember the restaurant's name?
