I hope someone out there can help.

My brother has been renting a studio apartment in Kansas City, MO for a number of years. Last week he came home from work to find a note on his door saying that the landlord is increasing the rent as of October 1st. But here is where it gets tricky.
My brother's current rent payment: $650 a month
Amount the landlord will start charging on 10/1: $1000 a month!

In other words, the landlord is jacking up the rent by more than 50%! And he has given just barely over one month's notice! My brother isn't the only one affected, either. All of the tennants in this building got the same notice.

This cannot be legal. Or can it? There are laws in many other states that limit the amount that a landlord can increase rent per year. However, I don't know if any such laws exist in Missouri. I do not live in Missouri and I don't know where or how to start to fight this thing. Does anyone know anything about this? Please help!

Well, Mrs. Steel I do not live in MO.All I can do is start the forum. I think you need at least 30 days notice or if you are on a lease for a year it can not be raised not SURE, I am not from MO. good luck

Does your brother have a signed lease, and if so, what are the terms agreed upon by both parties? I cannot give legal advice. Your brother should contact an attorney. Or, since he has been renting for so long, have a talk w/landlord. Good luck in this situation.

Tell him to go buy a house and he won't have to worry about landlords.

650 a month for how many years? He could have bought a house by now!

Question Legal?

Is there a lawyer in the house?
Where are they when you need one?

That's what I would recommend...have your brother talk to a lawyer.
And then a realtor.

Your brother can call the Missouri Attorney General's Consumer Complaint Hotline at 1-800-392-8222. I am sure their office could tell your brother right away if Missouri has any laws pertaining to rent increases.

Thank you Christina! We've never experienced anything like this before & had no idea where to begin (and one's mind can have a little trouble coming up with obvious answers when under such stress). Thanks to you, we now have a jumping-off point. I really appreciate it. Thanks again!
