I like the Springfield area as well. I bought two old run down properties in Ozark and one in Nixa about a year ago. I fixed them up and rented them out. The community there is great. I had great experiences working with contractors in that area. I have been very impressed thus far.

How fun to have a lake house, too! You go, Doc!

I dont take big vacations very often, I dont even have time too! It is nice to have a weekend getaway thats clost to home. I found a 1600 sq ft place thats about 10 years old down there. Its beautifull and the lake prices to my opinion were great!

First place to visit - Houston, Solo to be specific, close to the Tyrone area, in 1971 at the tender age of 18. First visit with my father since I was 3 years old - sadly, bitter divorce! We all met at my grandparents' home on Hwy DD.
First impressions - Cultural Shock to the nth degree and I hail from the deep south with lots of rural areas. Drove through the night and arrived just after breakfast. It was raining cats and dogs and you could not even see the fog covered road. Made our hearts race. Paved roads turned into gravel. Finally found the small house of my grandparents on Hwy DD. Their home was standard for the area - small two room cabin with common living and dining areas and one bedroom. Entire house was about the size of my greatroom. There was an earthen storm shelter carved into the landscape that held about 3 feet of water if it rained. The shelter had a "bench" about 3 feet long and two feet wide carved into the dirt and two carved out areas to hold food. The outhouse was located about 1/4 mile from the cabin. No running water. Electricity and telephone lines had been connected just prior to our visit. Talk about jaw dropping! I had no idea people still lived in those conditions. Even my rural, very rural, relatives in Mississippi and Alabama had it made in the shade compared to the conditions I found in Missouri. Next day we drove into Houston and Cabool and found civilization. Could not believe the difference 17 miles made in creature comforts. We also visited relatives in Springfield which I was very impressed with. Fell head over heels in love with Missouri.
My husband and I had been trying for over the past three years to sell our home and move to Springfield - to be with my Dad during his last days but such was not to be the case. Lost my beloved father in March of 2005. My mother passed away in December of 2006 from cancer and Alzheimer's. Hubby and I were caretakers so we could not abandon her. Now, we are praying daily a buyer will come sidling up the sidewalk. Our daughter and grandson relocated last Feb. to Springfield so we are more than anxious to make the move. Keeping our fingers crossed.
City-Data - have used frequently in the past but not before my first Missouri introduction. Discovered the forum this past summer and just lurked around a bit until I was comfortable with the forum and the people. Must admit, C-D is top drawer with me. So proud to be a part of this forum.

Cool! Finding a good contractor is a good thing! I may just have to DM you to find out who they were! As contractors, we are always looking for good referrals and it's amazing how often we need one!

Well, usually one of the great deterrents to taking a vacation is all the time and money spent just getting there. A home on the lake is my kind of vacation...the ultimate relaxing getaway! And the fact that yours is only a couple of hours drive away is a BIG BONUS in my book!

That's what my Mom says. I guess college was a fun time for most people.

My family has been there for over 100 years, there is still a cousin in Broseley, he is the self-proclaimed mayor , he restored the old cotton gin. I remember going to the cafe when I was little, still have some other relatives in the area too, they have mostly decamped for the bright lights of Poplar Bluff, lol.
