HAD is the key word...prior to the Civil War that is. And if you are in fact an expert on the border wars, you should know that the border ruffians were only a portion of Missouri's population, and that its mentality was not very southern at all, but deeply divided. This is evidenced in its actions during the Civil War...Missouri wanted neutrality...when forced to choose sides, the majority of it supported the Union, but a decent portion sympathized with the Confederacy. I suppose you're right, that's a very southern mentality
