When I was living along the Missouri River and driving to visit my Mom just North of Springfield I always considerd South of 50 HWY the Ozarks. There is a definite change in the lay of the Land and people.
I know when I first moved here the people in the area said I would make it because I already knew the ways from living here until I was 17.
Just North of 50 HWY
Around here
Down my road
Up on the Main Road

I think that's a reasonably accurate definition, although once you get west of Jefferson City and Cooper County the Ozarks end and give way to the Osage Plains. I think that Highway 50 is where the Ozark foothills begin, and the actual Ozark Mountain range begins somewhere around Rolla. I don't sense a gigantic change in terms of the people, although I do notice the accents taking on the form of a slight Southern twang the further south I go, and some elements of Southern culture beginning to appear, as well as less Catholic characteristics and more Baptist elements. Finally, obviously less agriculture, more rocky soil, and many rednecks, unlike in the rest of the state. I think the Ozarks are great in terms of that they seem to have an influence from both the Midwest, South, Plains, as well as their very own unique identity. Lots of cattle and dairy farms.

I see the shift to the Ozarks terrain on the drive south on I55 from STL...... by the time I get in Jeff County I am feeling it, and when I hit the Ste Gen County line, I KNOW I am there, there is a subtle shift in the terrain, but its there, and its the Ozarks!

Yeah. You see it on both I-44 and I-55. You definitely are in the Northern Ozarks once you hit Jefferson County. The Ozarks...one of America's greatest gems Love rafting on the rivers and fishing....also love exploring the caves and hiking. Great for outdoor activities and rich in culture. Not to mention, a truly continental climate. A true mixture of Midwestern and Southern culture if I ever saw one.
