As someone who, mistakenly, moved across the state line from Kansas to Missouri, start with the obvious "SHOW ME STATE" is their claim to fame? Please - there's plenty they (see I'm still not "one of them after 20 years) need to be shown, to be brought out of the dark ages into the light. btw - trying to get out its just that in the housing collapse I got caught with a bad hand. In the game of musical chairs, lets say, I got left standing. Yes, yes, Kansas has had its share of sins and sinners like Dr.Death the late term abortionist aka George Tiller. OOH boy the feminazi's and proponents of the notion there is a WAR ON WOMEN are gonna swarm me if they are anywhere nearby. Duck and cover.

I'd like to hear both more about the scenario in which you're still an outsider after 20 years, and how you think Missourians need to be "brought out the of the dark ages into the light" and which Missourians you're talking about if it's a specific group.

While in Sioux Falls for one night I watched the local news: They ran a story about South Dakota's high rate of poverty--one of the highest in the U.S. It makes sense since there is no major economic development in South Dakota. There are hardly any jobs for the half million people in the state. The whole state is nothing but a giant cattle ranch. As you drive across I-90, there a tiny towns about every 50 miles with 200 people and one gas station. That's as good as it gets in South Dakota.

Yeah, the winters really suck out there.

1. The high poverty rate is nearly all due to the multiple reservations. There is little that SD can really do about that because the reservations are technically separate countries.

2. There is a bunch of economic activity in Sioux Falls and to a lesser extent Rapid City (mainly tourism in Rapid.) The low tax rates in SD and Sioux Falls' location right next to the border with high-tax MN make it a very fast-growing place for businesses. The southern half of Sioux Falls in Lincoln County was one of the top fastest-growing population centers in the nation.

3. There are over 800,000 people in the state and unemployment is pretty low if you don't count the reservations.

The rest of the state is pretty much all ranching, corn, and beans though.

I've been to SD a few times. I actually like it better than MO. It's harder to find white collar jobs, but people seem to love their state. Most Missourians are somewhat apathetic towards MO.

^Do you think that apathy is specifically typical of urban/metropolitan residents or all Missourians?

All I guess. I'm not from Missouri, but most people I work with are. I always tell them that I really like it here, but they are always like "I guess it's okay...". Maybe the fact that they've lived here their entire lives has something to do with it.
