Is Viburnum a friendly place to live?
I'm looking at a small place in Viburnum, homestead type property, to have some animals, grow some food, make some friends, live simply. What do y'all know personally about this area I was thinking of staying in rural or semi-rural Calif/Oregon but, while researching, came across several Missouri areas that might be appealing enough to leave my friends and family here, and start anew. Any other suggestions

If you are coming from the West Coast you might be in for some culture shock. Viburnum is located in a VERY rural part of Missouri in the Ozark Mountains. The town is located in Iron County which has around 10,000 people. Taum Sauk Reservoir collpased in this area a few years ago, and it was a large hydroelectric power generator in the area. Jobs would be rather limited in this area, but would be a good place to retire with fairly friendly people.

Viburnum/West Coast culture shock
Thanks for the concern. I grew up rural, and am looking to return to that. As much of So.Cal. has been enveloped into cities and suburbs, not my personal style, increasingly I am looking elsewhere. I have time to look and research, and am both willing and excited to live "very rural" again!

LisaMae - if that is the case, I would hazard to think that you just might enjoy Viburnum. Have spent some time in that area, and you will find the usual small town attitudes - smile and friendly, yet reserved and semi-suspicious of non-locals. The area is predominately vested to logging and mining, with some other industries. Good people tho', IMHO - and they are proud of their heritage; matter of fact if ya can hanker over to the area in a couple weeks, might desire to check out their Old Miner's Day in Viburnum, MO. Just down the road from Viburnum in Bixby is a very little restaurant, w/ a caboose attached...
The following might be of interest too:
Iron County Missouri Home Page - Iron County...
University of Missouri Extension - Iron County - University of MO, Iron County extension office
Viburnum, Missouri - Viburnum, MO home page
There is also Missouri's Meramec Region: Economic Development, Business Opportunity, Industrial Sites, Tourism, Manufacturing, Education, Environment, Relocation - region just to the NW of Viburnum area...

Looking for house to Rent in Viburnum
HI there,
I think Viburnum is a very friendly nice town. I love the bixby store.
My husband works there during the week and we are looking for a nice house to rent. Something in the St Joe Drive area (neighborhood) would be great.
I know there are a lot of houses that be for sale for a quiet awhile so I'm thinking someone would like to rent one. We have good income, credit, and references.
Please email me if you know of any nice houses to rent.

Looking for house to buy
Yes I have contacted a realtor. There is only one for sale but it has tenants in it right now. Need something to buy ASAP. I know there is a lot of house in the area "for sale by owner". I drive around the area and look in the paper.
Just seeing if anyone else knows of anything .

Moving to Viburnum is like taking a time warp back about 25 years. Good luck. I think they *just* got rid of the horse-drawn carriages..
