Son graduating college and moving this summer from East Coast to work in St Louis for first real job.

We have never been to St. Louis. Job is on western side by maryland heights off of 270.

Some people saying to live in city because more excitement and things to do. Others say to move out to west and be close to job.

Any ideas on area to move to , or definitely avoid.

Thanks

Depends. Entertainment is drive able .. job is the same .. how far does he want to drive?

And what life style is he use to.

Personally I could not live in St. Louis . I prefer the country and small town life.
So I think its a matter of what he wants.. How much of a comute time does he want. And that Am Traffic is not nice. I use to leave for work at 5 am to get there at 7 ...and often was late leaving at 5! (From Illinois side)
cost of living plays into this I am sure ..how much does he want to spend ...
gas vs. apartment as well.

2beamo'ian gave some very good advice, which I will sortof echo here...

If at all possible, please have him look at means to not have to commute upon 270 itself - I've seen traffic in all 6 lanes [6 lanes in each direction] come to complete stop during rush times, and even in other times, be doing 60 and then all of sudden down to 10 or so; not a cool thing with me.

As far as living in the city vs. out in the western side, both have their own particular flavour and pros/cons. Just depends upon what he likes, his preferences, as stated in 2b's post, his life style, what he is used to and/or desires. Me, altho' I am a hillbilly who much prefers the star lit skies at night w/ the sounds of running streams and critters instead of the hustle/bustle of the paved jungle, I could indeed live in the StL, esp. near University City area.

StL area, as a whole, does indeed offer much - the Landing, the Hill, the Delmar Loop area, St Charles w/ its casinos and other attractions, Riverport, Westport Plaza, the Blues and Cards and Rams, etc etc., and all can be got to relatively quickly no matter where he ends up. The daily wear and tear, the grind of driving in the city each morn and evening, each way day after day, that to me would play biggest role as to where I would locate. Olive, Dorsett, Lindbergh [aka Kirkwood in a certain area ], and Page, for example, can also be somewhat busy too - yet, are also convenient to that area.

One relatively good thing about the StL area, even tho' it is a large metro, it is fairly easy to get from one side to the other [N-S or E-W], w/o much time or effort.

BTW, if you look at a map of that area [for example, ]Maryland Heights, MO, USA - Google Maps you will see 364, that is known as the Page Extension - now, if he really wanted to live in the western area, would recommend being able to travel via that route, instead of on I-70. Also, the Creve Coeur Park is very scenic, some nice attractions.

Unfortunately, StL does not have that great of a light rail mass transit system; somewhat limited coverage area relative for the city/county area, and some issues of late w/ mechanical/maintenance concerns. A map of what areas are served: http://www.metrostlouis.org/MetroBus/Maps/SystemMaps/MapMetroLinkMR.pdf (broken link)

Best of luck!

As a parent who raised two sons that went off to college and later to jobs in other areas, I would suggest that you immediately go to your local library and hopefully they will have a recent copy of the St. Louis Post Dispatch, the daily newspaper OR go online to St. Louis Post Dispatch and search classifieds and get a general 'feel' for areas. As mentioned in previous posts, St. Louis does have so much to offer and is highly diversified in housing and entertainment and cultural interests. The University City area near Washington University is a desirable location with competitive rental choices and prices. St. Louisans like to say that they are within 20 minutes of any place within the city and surrounding areas. However I too, would suggest to shy away from certain highways, esp. Hwy 40 which is currently undergoing major construction. Good luck.

My family is from and near st.louis and its not a great idea to live INSIDE st.louis epically if its your first time...... good areas that are close are wentzville and foristell. Although the traffic is heavy in the long run St.Louis is a thriving and wonderfull community that I would reccomend all around

What's wrong with North County. I work in Maryland Heights in Westport. I live off of 270 and Linbergh which is considered Florissant/Hazelwood. My sister lives off of 270 and Dorsett, a couple of exits up (which is Maryland Heights). Both of us having working families, we ar home owners, my child attends a wonderful school. And we both have young progressive families. Don't stereotype a whole area. I have lived here for 7 years and haven't experienced any adverse effects of living in North County.
