30-40 miles outside of Wentzville, Missouri
Hi Everyone... I need some help...Hubby is looking at a job transfer in Wentzville. He is used to a 30-40 mile commute. We enjoy country living, with at least two acres, does not have to be a new home as we enjoy remodeling too. We are going to fly in next month and check it out so I would love to hear some feedback on some areas to look at. Thanks for any information....

Welcome! Lets see here... a radius of ~40 miles, gives you a very wide opportunity, with a quite diverse range of areas. Approximately, that would give you from Danville [west], cutting down towards Hermann and then Marthasville, Union/Washington to the south, and then over by the Missouri River Defiance area. Going north, you then have the Mississippi River towns of Winfield up to Elsberry. Sweeping back west, can include towns of Auburn, Troy, and Truxton.
Didn't mention children, so going on the premise that schools are not important? Would you rather be closer to the StL metro area itself?
Not that other areas are not just as worthy of you taking a look, but the Missouri River valley areas are quite nice. Have some slight hills to more rolling terrain, seclude spots if so desired. Along w/ being close to some wonderful wineries, restaurants, and scenic places KATY trail is that area too, if such is of interest]. Con is that getting from point A to Wentzville would then require travel on two lane state and county roads - which depending on the person doing such day in and day out, can be tiresome or frustrating, esp. if consider the weather and/or local traffic.
Hope that helps at least gets a start of thoughts on ideas... maybe can narrow it down, for example if yas are thinking north, south, etc.? G'luck

ahhhhhhhhh My Mother in law just sold her home in Wentzville...........after she realized we were not moving there ...lol long story .. (Nope not living in the same town as my mother in law ... I prefer to be states apart )
cute area ..lots of growth and new things happening ...
where her home was situated was outside of town ..on 1 acre and the land developer is still developing in that area last time we were there .........I bet ya could pick something up there .. with ground ....If I recall my mother in law had a full basement, 2 car garage , fireplace , open floor plan and 3 bedrooms and a fireplace .. tri level deck etc ......... and she had it built on the 1 acre for 130k ...about 5 minutes out of town if that .. but had a very rural feel to it

No kids..so no worries on schools..
He is used to hitting a interstate and cruising into work, if that helps with the area...
Tobeamissourian....Do you recall the subdivision name the MIL lived in...That would be something we could check out on our trip...
We are native Georgians who just transferred to Texas last year... The Big T is nice but from the looks of Missouri it will feel more like home...
Another question...Does Missouri handle yalls snow good? I know in Georgia and Texas both if more than ten snowflakes land on the ground they are in lock down mode. I know Missouri has more snow than both of them so I would assume they are more prepared for it. If it snows 4 inches with two inches of ice can the DOT keep the roads cleared so you can get to work? How does all that work. I know last year you guys had one heck of an ice storm with lots of power outages didn't know how that affected everyone trying to get to work and school....

If I cant remember the sub division name .......... Ill see if my hubby can or .. I can tell ya how to get there ..........
Last years Ice storm was awful... That is not a norm thing ..and if something happens like that most places close .. not sure what your hubby does ..but if it gets bad ..bad is bad .. DOT keeps the road cleared (is u live in an area where they cover) Where I live is not covered by DOT we have village trucks and .. well they are about useless .......... but we have awesome farmers who do not mess around ...... The boys out here have every excuse to get those tractors going! (I am in Illinois)
I dont think you will have any worries with the snow ...

MODOT - Missouri (MO) Department Of Transportation does an excellent job in clearing Missouri's highways and State roads cleared, as do most of the individual county department's of transportation. Highway 70, which is the main highway going through the Wentzville area, has never had any recent problems that I can recall. I have traveled the area many times during the last 45 years.
Some county gravel roads will cause concerns during inclement weather that occurs during the overnight hours due to notification of department workers and setting into motion the equipment required.
Only once was I ever stranded in Columbia, MO. which is west of the area in question and that occurred many years ago. Actually, had quite a good time as I spent the night at a very nice motel with many from our Missouri Realtors and we just partied a little longer than otherwise would have. All joking aside, roads, highways are sometimes under construction in that area, so that would be more of a concern, IMO.
I personally would not let the winter/snow be too much of a major concern. Once you are here, you will learn to handle it like a native. Good luck to you.

TobeaMissourian- That would great if you find out, if not we can do directions..just keep me posted..
Shadow...What are some good towns in the Missouri River Valley area...?
Well I guess hubby will be out there on his tractor too....I can this as something he would enjoy... I figured MODOT was on top of their game.
When we fly in next month...what would be some good places to check out? We both do not have a desire to tour St. Louis. Good places to eat? We are not "mexican fans" but pretty much anything else is wide open!
Ohhh yeahhh...(I am gonna wear you guys out) Where is a good place to stay? Does not have to be a hotel...We are open for cabins, B&B, or anything on that lines. We are big RVers so everything is a big adventure to us !
Everyone has such great information....Its is greatly appreciated....

As far as winter driving is concerned, central Mo will have several snowfalls, of several inches up to 12-14 inches, per winter and you will have to learn to drive on snow and ice. Parking lots and streets in town are likely to be snow packed even when the main roads have been cleared. but the snow melts within a few days to a week normally. there are often really mild periods throughout the winter also. It can get really cold here...the coldest I can remember was -20 F.
For your visit, as mentioned already, the wineries are really fun. If you google "Hermann Wine Trail" you can get info on 6 or 7 wineries near Hermann.
