I dont know if I have the answers but ... it depends lots on money , economy, ground that you have, hay prices, and what age you buy them at and who .. and if You know what you are looking for ...

Kareybear is right we do have a new baby ..actually 2 new babies .. My grandson was born on the 26 .. our calf is just 2 weeks older than him!

We have one now we have to bottle feed - he gets fed at 630 am and around 530 pm

Our other big cows we purchased about a year ago .. are less work
mosty grazing ... but we do give them feed and hay .....but this year we didn't have rain so hay is a source of OUCH! right now ..prices are high and we didn't bail enough so we have to buy it!

Now hubby has friends .. who raise animals and we buy from them ..or like this last one we purchased it from the Amish .. we did this for a reason . We wanted a breed that has not been packed with so much garbage but a good cow!
The meat we buy in the store is full of garbage that causes so much disease its not even funny! We do not raise a bunch of cows at a time .........we are actually talking only 1 per year just to feed our family ........we have 3 now and $ is tight due to no rain!
we also have hogs (errrrrrrrr - if they get loose one more time there wont be a hog left at my house. Imagine me chasing down a 300 lbs hog that would rather bite me than go back in his pen ......... they are climbing out of a pen ... nobody in our family has seen a hog do this before!) ..and chickens

Here is a pic of my first born baby ..Calf .. his name is Brownie (my grandson named him) they crawl over the fence panels and lay in his straw with him and talk ..its soo cute!

Me feeding Brownie when he was about 5 days old

I have raised beef cattle in N.E. Mo. on a small scale a few years ago. Had 30-35 head of mixed angus and herford cows. It is possible to make a few $ if you have plenty of pasture, water, and good fencing. I fed no grain, only pasture in summer and hay in winter along with salt and minerals. The calves were dropped in early spring, ran with cows all summer and sold off in fall usually at 400-600 lbs. for feeders. Local markets usually strong. Cows need to be wormed and fly tagged in spring.
They need to be checked daily, stay easier to work if you stay in close contact that way.

Fly tagging involves putting tags in the cows' ears that are impregnated with an insect repellant.

Actually fly tags inthe ears are very effective in keeping flies away from the eyes that can often cause blindness if not properly treated. In checking the cattle, I meant they should be daily checked for any injuries or sickness and to make sure they are all in pastures at home and not visiting the neighbors cattle. Such as a tree knocking a fence down or wire broken. They usually don't want to come home and you for sure don't want to lose them. The joys of being a cowboy never ends!
