Where is the best place to live on the Mississippi River? I don't want to be in the city or suburbs but I don't want to be TOO far from services (decent hospital, basic shopping) either.

Describe 'best'?

Do prefer, based on what you do know, to be closer to northern [tad colder], central [closer to StL], southern [warmer] part of the river?

How many acres?

For example, there are some excellent places, w/ awesome views here and there, but,,, how much is such worth to you, especially in an area close to the 'metro' services you described? The area between StL and Herculaneum, has some really neat bluff overlooks - is that your desire, or would rather have more intimate, flatter overlook? You want the sun to rise or set over the river in the morning? Maybe the IL side if you want the sun to set in the evening over the river?

How far is TOO far from those services, by mile and/or time?

Yea, some questions so we can help you

btw, welcome to CDF...

Yes, I'd like to be up on those bluffs. I grew up in the mountains, have lived in the flat parts of the Midwest for the last 30 years, and a real view would be wonderful. The climate range North to South would all be fine, I can deal with heat and cold. My husband has a lot of health issues which is why I mention a decent hospital not too far. Shopping? If I could get to a full supermarket and at least a Walmart, Target, whatever, in 20 minutes or so I'd be happy. God I must be getting old. Any chance of Chinese food in the same distance?

lol, love your thinkings Ok, I've only traveled along the Missississississippi River from StL to Memphis, and from my recollection, would maybe [again] recommend the area between StL and Herky - as that offers some areas that are of your interest - but, don't have any ideas of prices nor availability. Also, this is a large swath, but between Ste. Genevieve to Hannibal areas will have bluffs, of various sizes and distances from the river - so, then need to look at areas (a) that offer the services [shopping, medical, etc.], and (b) acreage of interest and pricing. With the mention of the health issues, being relatively close to the StL or other larger city might not be too bad of idea, which then narrows down the search area. Maybe, besides what info/advice you gather from this forum, you might also want to contact a Realtor in those larger cities along the river, letting them know what you are after, your price range, and then see what they can locate for you that is currently on the market. Best of luck - hope this helps some, and holler back - maybe some others will share some specific/different thoughts too.

That be good area too [Cape Girardeau] - but not sure if the bluffy area would be enough plus be close enough to services... be nice/good region though. Wonder, as mentioned above, if the IL side [just as an example, Columbia, IL] would be appropriate too? But, services would be relatively further away and then while trying to be overlooking the river, I guess...

Elsah, Illinois is a small, cute town. Not too far from civilization, close enough to get to a decent grocery store in 10 to 15 minutes. But, quaint and quiet. Good luck!

Elsah is a great pick - I use to live there!

there is the new places on Grafton Hills as well

Now you did not mention price range .......... or taxes ...

Part of Godfrey Illinois has bluffs .........

There is also the old Christian neighborhood .. I grew up knowing it as the Catholic Neighborhood .. its Alton but its over looking the Bluffs ... I babysat in this neighborhood as a kid!

Elsah and Grafton have a few different ways to go - Most go to Alton for shopping / Doctors etc .. Groceries and its not that far

I happen to know where a nice piece of property is with a pond and hills .. close by to both of these places .. <<HINT HINT>>

oh forgot to add . I lived in Wyoming at the bottom of a Mountain area as a child ........ my fondest memories are there ... where I hinted about earlier has that same feel .... we are just relocating to Missouri ... EVENTUALLY!!
