Sweet gum trees make great shade, but it is not worth the nusiance if it is in a yard or close to the house. The sweet gum balls it drops are hard, spiky and useless. You can't burn the things, they don't compost well, they are hard to rake up. The dog can't even run across them because they hurt her feet and you can twist an ankle if you step on one. They break apart and make great projectiles if you hit them with the mower. I know, I have a 60 foot tree right outside my back door. Every summer I rake up 30-40 bags of balls. Except this year! The late snow meant no balls grew! About the only solution is a chainsaw at ground level, then burn out the stump. Unfortunately my tree will take out the house, pool, power lines and neighbors fence if we drop it.

coupla things here real quick

WTG Kareybear on getting a picture thread back up 'n' running!! As soon as I can get some pics uploaded I'll post em up. I'm still swiping internet access and it's sooo slllooooowwwww.

The other pic thread wasn't technically "locked". Due to the size of the thread I asked Plains10 to go ahead and close her down. When a thread (especially a pic thread) becomes that big it is almost impossible for anyone to take it all in. Closing threads that get that ginormous is common on internet forums and if the topic is fairly popular someone usually starts a new thread along the same topic line....just like Kareybear did!! It has been done this way as long as I've been cruizin' around these internet forums (which is a long time ) so I hope folks don't think anyone did anything wrong which may have had the thread closed.

Have a great weekend all and let's see your pics!!

The leaves have finally turned so I will attempt to post some pics. This is the reason Carthage is called the "Maple Leaf City"
