Lead cannonballs were manufactured in Herculaneum and used in the War of 1812. Lead smelting by the Doe Run Company is no longer operating and is under a shutdown process. It was a major industry in Herculaneum until its closure due to inability to match EPA regulations due to environmental and health effects.

Irondale Missouri was laid out in 1857 by John G Scott who built an iron furnace there. The town briefly changed its name to Savoy in 1906 to solve the problem of mail getting mixed up with the nearby towns of Ironton and Iron Mountain but was changed back to Irondale a few years later.

Jefferson City Missouri was originally called " Lohman's Landing ", and when the legislature decided to relocate there, they proposed naming it " Missouriopolis " before settling on Jefferson City, for Thomas Jefferson.
Jefferson City currently holds the title of America's " Most Beautiful Small Town ", given by Rand McNally.


Jasper Missouri is the nominal setting of the 1989 movie Road House, starring Patrick Swayze; however, the movie was not actually filmed in Jasper. Critic Robert Trussell noted, " Little effort was made to hide the (California) mountains in the background."


Jamesport Missouri was named after two of its first settlers, James Gillilan and James Allen.


Jackson Missouri was originally called Birdstown and was changed to Jackson on August 31, 1819, named for Andrew Jackson. It was the first town to be named after him.

Joplin Missouri is named after Reverend Harris G Joplin who settled in the area around 1840.

8,400 houses, 18,000 cars, and 450 businesses were flattened or blown away by the EF5 tornado that struck Joplin on May 22, 2011.

Kearney Missouri was originally called Centerville. It is most famous for being the birthplace of Jesse James and there is an annual festival in the third weekend of September to recognize the notorious outlaw.


Kennett Missouri was named after Luther M Kennett, a mayor of St. Louis. It was originally called Chilletecaux in honor of a Delaware Indian chief who lived there, and renamed Butler in the 1840s. It was changed to Kennett because of mail delivery problems.

Kimberling City is a city in Stone County Missouri. Some episodes of the Beverly Hillbillies TV series were filmed in the area.


The first European settler in King City Missouri was John Pittsenbarger, who set up a tent town in 1856. His application to name the town Petersburg was rejected because there was already a town of that name in Boone County, Missouri. According to local legend, the United States Postmaster General submitted his name, which was Horatio King.

La Monte Missouri was platted in 1866 and was originally called Boomer.


Lamar Missouri was laid out in 1856. It was named for Mirabeau B Lamar, second President of the Republic of Texas.


Lake Lotawana is a man made lake community built in the 1920's. It was incorporated as a city in 1958 and is said to be named after an Indian princess.

Ladue Missouri has the highest median household income of any city in Missouri with a population over 1,000, as well as one of the highest median incomes for any city in the United States.


Laddonia Missouri was laid out in 1871. It was named for Amos Ladd, an early settler, and his wife, Onia.


Knob Noster Missouri was mentioned in the 1983 television movie The Day After.
