We'd like to stay on the west side of Callaway, so that we have easier access to Columbia/JC.
Renting is not an appealing option...DH is just getting out of the military and we've been renting for a while, so we're really looking forward to owning. We're thinking that if we're concentrating on Fulton and its environs, it won't take long to see what's out there...

Fulton is sleepy, but not a bad little town. You'll probably like it.

Millersburg is an old farming community. Though still rural, many of the old farms have been subdivided with new houses popping up everywhere. There is a convenience store, licensed daycare, feed store, bar & grill, pool hall (also serves food), b&b (w/restaurant), antique mall/flea market, music theater, scrapbook store, automotive/wrecker business, and several industrial businesses (mailing company, bridge company, etc). Folks from Columbia have escaped to Millersburg to save on taxes, break away from planning & zoning, smell the clean air - yet remain only 15 min from the University and all that Columbia has to offer. This has driven housing prices up, but they're still quite reasonable. And if you want acreage, you'll have no problem finding land.
We live in the country, rarely lock our doors, our kids play by the creek, and we meet at the Lions Club for the community 4th of July Parade and Party and at the church for Sunday carry-in-dinners. No joke. "Redneck" is not an insult. Folks still smile out here!
Millersburg is in the Fulton school district - good schools - conservative. You'll get to know the teachers, administration, and even the superintendent on a first name basis. Great Football Team - GO HORNETS! Previous posts indicate that South Callaway is a good school - and they are well-financed - but nothing to offer in the way of sports. There are 2 private elementary schools (1 nondenominational, 1 Catholic). Many homeschoolers. Closest Catholic high school is in Jefferson City - pretty easy to find car pools.
Fulton is a quaint town. 50's atmosphere. Still has a drug store downtown that serves great shakes - perfect place to prepare for the homecoming parade! One way brick streets. And beautiful Christmas decorations. Kids go trick or treating in town (after the Millersburg community party) - and everyone is quite friendly.
5 min from I-70, 1.5 hr from St. Louis, 2 hr from KC, 15 min from Columbia, 30 min from Jeff City, 1 hr from Lake of the Ozarks.

Fulton Missouri area
Ok, I am brand-brand new to this - am still leary as to what exactly will happen to this 'thread' when I hit 'send'.... but when I saw this recent discussion about Fulton .... I'm gonna dive in
I am not so sure I'll be able to find my way back to this site, but if I can offer any insights or education about our community I would be delighted to do so.
Born n raised here, left and came back here... I'll be admittedly biased, but certainly upfront. Happy to help.

Lots to see and do in Fulton
Well, let's see.... as for the B & Bs (as in Beds and Bkfsts) - we have two - each of which is classy and unique and owned by super duper people who live and work in this community. Loganberry Inn is located on W. 7th Street near the colleges and Romancing the Past is located only a couple blocks away, downtown on the historical Court Street.
B&B as in the theater - is a new 8-plex cinema in the south end development area of Fulton. The OLD B&B has some pretty cool characteristics and nostalgia as well.
Restaurants - there's an amazing authentic Cuban Restaurant in downtown Fulton, it is owned by a local family, originally from Cuba - the Vilas. They are a beautiful family and a blessing in this little midwestern town! Also downtown is Bek's Restaurant - also a classy spot, great ambiance and entertainment on occassion. Across the street is the infamous China Palace Restuarant where the Gau family has become very well known and loved. And also downtown is a quaint little "Mom's Cafe" - great cookin'! You say we have a scrap book store..... you got me on that one..... I'll have to get back to you there. Thanks for the moment of curiosity!

Hi Mikki! That is a good list of things in Fulton. I agree Fulton, and Callaway County, is a great place to live.
My question was in regard to Litig8r's post above that Millersburg has "convenience store, licensed daycare, feed store, bar & grill, pool hall (also serves food), b&b (w/restaurant), antique mall/flea market, music theater, scrapbook store, automotive/wrecker business, and several industrial businesses (mailing company, bridge company, etc)" I was curious where there might be a bed and brkfast, music theater, and scrapbook store in Millersburg...was not aware those things existed there.

In regards to Millersburg's music theater and such, at the I-70 exit to Millersburg is a new little row of shops which include a music theater that primarily host country and Christian music, a fairly large antique and flea market, a restaurant and a motel, I think. These are about 5 miles out of town. I live in Fulton, wouldn't live in Millersburg because you have to drive at least 10 miles any way to get to any decent shopping.
Fulton is not as small as it used to be. The signs say 12000, but I think with the addition of Dollar General's warehouse and all the other additions, it's probably closer to 16,000 now.
If your husband is going to work at the Nuclear plant, I would recommend either Fulton or Jefferson City. But the nice thing about Fulton......we are 20 miles to Columbia and 20 miles to Jefferson City and an hour and a half from town to St Louis airport. Not too bad of a drive actually.
You can still walk the streets at night, the schools are pretty good in comparison to other small towns in Missouri, there are plenty of things to do either in town or within 20 miles either way, and plenty of reasonably priced houses for sale.
Oh and there are plenty of carpools to the Nuke plant from Fulton or Jeff City available.
