I was born a girl in 1989 in Dallas, lived there almost my whole life. Really progressive and charming. Not. At school, i didn't fit in with the other kids, refused to be stamped blue or red, and has a name that's really ambiguous anyways (Alex). On Sundays when our family went to church, i would always get singled out by the congregation (although they never mentioned me by name) as 'that' guy/gal who was a disgrace to them (especially hurts cuz after sermons theres always like a churchgoers' picnic or something..). Now that i'm an adult, no longer under the control of my reactionary traditionalist dad. (my mom was really understanding, although still had some reservations about my identity.) I never identified with boy or girl. I rejected the notion of God early in life after experiencing family tragedies (read: my grandparents got killed by a drunk driver) and the creationist myth didnt really seem to make sense to me. Im a left-wing socialist activist (in my own way). Now i want to move to Missouri with my partner, what town (preferably with a population below 2,500) would be best for me?
sorry if i sound really vague :3

To answer the OP's question, I don't think there are any small towns in MO that would be a good fit. The most liberal areas are cities like St. Louis and Kansas City. I would consider moving to a large MO city, or looking into other states. Missouri small towns are typically conservative & Christian. Good luck relocating.

The only "small" town in MO I would consider if I were you is Columbia (roughly 115K) which, for Missouri, is quite progressive and the home of the U of MO.

However, as long as you insist on challengingly labeling yourself - "Genderqueer godless liberal " - I really doubt you'd fit in anywhere but perhaps, as others have mentioned, California.

Why Missouri? I doubt that you're actually sincere. My guess is that this is a one-post, drive-by attempt to stir others up.

Just south of the Missouri border is the only truly small-town I know of in this part of the country that is really gay-friendly. Look up information on Eureka Springs Arkansas.

This is a new poster here on C-D... show some Missouri manners. Let's not be too hasty-- I think there are some options...surely. Alex could fit in somewhere in Columbia - not everywhere but it could work. What about somewhere around Lake of the Ozarks? If they can put up with the bible thumper conventions and the biker club gatherings they should be OK with Alex. Nearby, Olean has the Testicle Festival and there might be other places just as wacky. There is a small thread of tradition in some hardscrabble farming communities of women living as men and doing the heavy lifting on the farm -- it's not that farfetched but not as common today. And, some Ozark towns are so righteous and Godly and so perfectly wingnut in their own right that there is a shortage of bad examples. There could be a niche for Alex there. She could always run for the legislature...they are pretty wacky and nobody would notice.

You're not going to find a very accomodating town in Missouri with a population of 2,500. If you want a smaller town feel Columbia is probably your best bet. Even with a pop. of 108,500 it doesn't seem like it's that big. There are local LGBT groups and having MU close by means even more opportunities and support. Your next bets are either K.C. or St. Louis. Eureka Springs, AR, mentioned above, would also be a good option.

Might a long-time former resident of the area offer a suggestion? Within half an hour of KC, and smack dab in the middle of Koch-brothers-country, is hidden a completely different place. Lawrence, KS. The only blue county in Kansas, and like a little-bitty Austin. However, I haven't spent a lot of time there in years, so it might be more conservative than it used to be as I know it has grown a lot. The town is mostly built around KU, and you would find a lot of like-minded people. Employment seems to be more retail, restaurant, and university support, so big corporate jobs are kind of scarce, but the place is booming in everything else.
