Default New Missouri fiddler

Hi all

Thanks for the welcome .... I had orginally planned to retire in the W.V. area where I learned how to play the fiddle ... but this past summer I went down there again , rented a motel room , and after having to walk a 45 deg. angle hill back from the ice machine I realized that even if I try to take an early retirement I am alot more used to walking on pancake-flat NJ then on 45 deg. hills ....and those slopes during an icy winter must be terribly immobilizing !

I was in a pretty good band in NJ, a band that was like family. My guitar player retired early this summer and moved back to the place his Dad is from -Missouri . I told him that he isn't getting away from me that easy so I went to visit him in the fall .... most of the real estate I saw nearby his place had reasonable house prices but the pieces of land that came with the houses all seemed to be in a ravine ....I can't do any early retirement for 5 or 6 years yet, so a house would just fall apart... I decided I needed some land... so about 4 miles from his house I found a nice flat piece of land for sale that was going to have a rickety mobile home towed away for scrap .... the land is on a nice quiet road, I got trees, fields and a pond . My buddy told me that land there goes for about $3000 an acre or more .... so when I calculated it out it came to something like this ...

The land has a good working well w/pump , working septic system , electric pole ,electric hookups w/ new box + lightpole ..... if all of that is worth $10,000 then I did indeed get my land for 3,000 an acre .... if that stuff is worth more then $10,000 then I got a better deal ..... so far on the forum I saw one guy being quoted that having a well dug alone would cost $10,000 , so Im figuring that I didn't do too bad .... We are in the Lakes of the Ozarks area ...there's a cement public boat ramp about 10 minutes from my place.

At any rate, an acre of land in Nj is closer to $ 100,000 an acre , septic systems start at $20,000 plus the need to buy a bunch of socialist permits , a well here starts at $20,000 , on and on ... the taxes are highest in the nation ...just impossible to live here if you are working class.

Well, my buddy and I aren't normal Nj city slickers ...we are from an area called the pine barrens in NJ and people like us just got squeezed out of our area by all of the over-development, the NYC people moving in,etc.... time to move on :-)
I play music with an oldtimer who bought his NJ land when it cost $ 20 an acre ! He's older then dirt, God bless him .

So yes, in the next few years I'll need to build me a place in MO. ...I'd sure welcome any input about what types of homes y'all have out there ...I'll most likely afford a manufactered home of some sort , but hopefully I can pick a brand that is well-built . If there's any reasonable priced builders out there I'd sure like to check them out

What part of the lake area are you going to? We are moving to Rocky Mount at the end of this month. Missouri is great!

That's real close. Rocky Mount is about 15 miles from Versailles! Maybe we can hook up sometime. Do you like to hunt and fish? Both are exceptional there!

dfiddler, you are going to find a very lively music scene throughout Mo, I have friends in the Sullivan, Poplar Bluff, and Ste Genevieve areas that are all fiddlers, mandolin pickers, guitarists, etc...... they tell me that they all have very lively happenings, wish I was there...... anyway, I am glad you are making your way to Mo!

Just holler if you need any help. I've done my fair share of swinging a hammer!!

Oh and we always had deer meat in the freezer!

If you took highway W to the dam then you went through Rocky Mount.

Thanks kshe95girl , it warms my heart knowing that there's still some music playing folks in mid-mo ... it's going to be a major pre-occupation of mine trying to seek out those musical " happenings " LOL
Another reason why I choose to move to MO. is it 'sposed to be a fiddle-friendly place :-)

That was such a wise move to buy on flat land, fiddler! People tend to forget that if they're going to live there in the last years of their life, chances are good that stairs and hills could eventually become a problem.

I look forward to hearin' you fiddle someday! Maybe we'll have an OTFCC gathering with music by some of our fine musicians and singers! Darlynn's husband plays in Branson...I forget which instrument but I'm sure she'll jump in here sooner or later.

It sounds like you got a great deal on your property and you're certainly in a beautiful location! How exciting! I don't know about mobile home manufacturers but I thought I'd mention that I've seen some beautiful used mobilehomes that people have bought and moved onto their land. If money is an issue, I'd check into that route, as well.

Thanks for sharing more of your story with us! Now, I want to know if there is a MRSdafiddler and or jr fiddlers out there, anywhere!
