What are your faveorite things about the area?
How long have you lived here??
What do you not like about it???
Good and bad eats???
best things to do here for fun???
OK Doc, Don't mean to put you on the spot but how did you end up in Joplin? How long? Best things to do for fun? Just curious, trying to narrow down my choices for towns to live in. Other than the Maple Leaf Festival in Carthage are there any other parades or get togethers in the area? Rodeos, Car Shows, things of that nature. If I wanted to take my camper someplace for the weekend where would I go? Any one else want to answer?

How I ended up in Joplin.... well, one of my first jobs as a new doctor was in KCMO. I had some encounters in KCMO that tested my ethics. I dodnt want to be in that environment and I really enjoy trauma surgery and emergency medicine (which was not originally my specialty in school). Joplin has two level 2 trauma centers that are known statewide for having great care. I had a friend from school that came down here for residency and loved it. I just fell into Joplin. It took me a while to adjust but I love it now. I think maybe one of the reasons I like it here so much is that it isnt the big city that has all kinds of things to do. Coming from NYC, its a good slow down even for a young guy like myself. I have been here for .... ohhh.... i guess its been about 3, going on 4 years.

If you wanted to take your camper out you could go to Stockton Lake, MO (1 hour), Grand Lake, OK (40 min), Table Rock Lake, MO 1.5 hours and my faveorite. There are several other rivers and camprounds around within 10 minutes or 2 hours that you can enjoy.

The city of Joplin has "Boomtown Days" every year in June in a big city park. It has something to do with the mining days of the city. Its a three day event that has BBQ contects, carnival rides for kids, nightly concerts (some moderately big names). THere is the 4th of July festival that is pretty much the same as Boomtown Days except fireworks and there were skydivers last year. Airfest every other year. This is pretty cool but there were a lot of mad people this year because it rained and everyone had to be shuttled in because it was to wet to park. Also they closed down early with no refunds because of a tornadic storm. Now, my opinion on this is, if you know its going to storm and you dont want to loose 15 bucks, do go pay it! Now, getting off my soap box, there is Emancipation Days once a year. This is a pretty cool festival that celebrates the diverse culture in Joplin and Black History. There is some great food and small time entertainment.

Again, I love it here so much because the people are nice (compared to NY) and there isnt everything to do. You can find about anything you want to do within an hour or two hour drive from here but I think most people stay entertained. There is all of the chain store shopping that you will find in a very large city. Most of the chain eats are here and several others. THere are some great outdoor activities and a new natrue center and trail. All in all, I think most people find themselves entertained...... ps, excuse my typing... im watching the super bowl pregame....

Almost every small town in the area has its own festival in the summer or fall. There are 3 large rodeo arenas within a ten minute drive of Carthage as well as small arenas in Carthage, Webb City, and I think Diamond. The Midwest Gathering of the Artists is held here. There are lots of state parks where you can camp and hike-Roaring River has trout fishing, Devil's Den in
Arkansas has great trails, the Mark Twain Nat. Forest at Cassville, Petit Jean in Arkansas, you can even take your trailer to Branson. Beaver Lake in Ark. is another choice. Most larger towns have a Youth Fair as a prelim. to the State Fair held in Sedalia. Theres usually a fund-raiser dance, poker run or other get-together at least once a month. Plus the Farmer's Markets are a great place for fresh food, crafts and meeting neighbors. The Joplin Globe puts out a listing every week of area events.

Thanks to DocGSD and firebll31 for answering some of my questions. All though we don't live in Mo. yet I have spent some time there. I had an Aunt and Uncle that owned a farm by Stockton that I stayed with a couple summers when I was about 11 and 12 years old and continued to visit for many years till they passed away. I remember one summer the corps of engineers bought up a bunch of land that would be flooded when the Stockton Dam was completed. The locals could bid on buildings to be torn down and salvage any materials for them selves. I helped my Aunt and Uncle take the metal roof off of a barn and haul the sheets of tin back to their farm for some future project. The following summer there was a lake there. One other memory I have was many years later parking our first camper, (a tent trailer) in Shepard of the Hills Campground. We camped way in the back over looking a valley. My wife just loved the view and the whole camping experience except for the large Cacada that camped in the tree right next to us every night. Well thats my story and I'm sssssticking to it.

Minnesota and Missouri are like night and day. How can you actually compare a Minnesota lake with a Missouri reservoir?

I wasn't comparing anything. I know what a lake is and I guess I just typed the word lake because it was easier and faster. Now I guess I'll go stand in the corner.

Default Don't Go on green!!!

I do enjoy living in Joplin....However....I live by 3 hard fast driving rules.

1. Count to 3 when your light turns green (for the 3 morons that will run the light)

2. Do not follow too closely (especially on rangeline) Some people either don't know what a turn signal is or are too busy on their cell to free up a hand to use it.

3. Say a prayer, get a Buddha, light candles before attempting to cross four lanes of traffic on Rangeline without a traffic light.
