Joplin's probably in its third year of it. Although I'm not really a fan of it, downtown has come along quite a bit. They have re-done the sidewalks and landscape, added many loft apts, new buisnesses and eats have come, added a trolley, and cleaned up buildings. They have spent several millions of $$$ down there with state and federal grants. The only buisnesses that stay real busy on Main besides the clubs and eats are over priced, snoody stores like Newtons jewls. One place downtown is the True Value store. It is an old mom and pops store that has all kinds of hardware and appliances. It is cheep and the owners are nice.
I'm not really a fan because Joplin has a huge retail market on the other side of town. If they would put the money into it that they have spent on downtown they would proffit much more. New downtowns look good but they dont produce the sales tax revenue and proffit for retailers that a mall does.

I wonder what kind of retail centers will pop up along 249 once they get it completed. Their getting quite a bit of the interchange finished, which looks pretty cool. I hope that there will be at least some new businesses to open up. I've been on it quite a bit, but usually I only see three to four cars all the way from Zora to I-44. I hope it sees a lot more traffic then that, maybe when they get it finished more people will use it. I would like to see new businesses that don't have another location in Joplin get locations there instead of the same McDonalds or Wendy's and Wal-Mart and Conoco.

I think you will see it. A few years ago, I read that there was some sort of music festival every year. The hotels were sold out for miles around. I heard that a huge hotel resort was going to be built but the festival screwed a lot of people out of money and they were shut down. That probably put a short term damper on things. I know that Joplin, Duenweg, Duquesne, Carterville and Webb City are fighting for this land. Joplin went out and annexed a bunch of it several years ago. Duquesne is land locked with Joplin all the way around it, Duenweg is a very nasty, dirty little town, Webb City is ok and Carterville .... well the name pretty much says it. Joplin will be able to support the growth and development much better than these other small towns. If Joplin knows one thing, its expanding. Joplin has been expanding in great quantity of land for the past few years. I fully support Joplin taking this development and they do have most of it now.
There is an industrial park in the Joplin City limits out on 24th street east of 249 on Kodiak Road. It has really grown. I would like to see commercial and retail services start to gorw out this way. There is plenty of room to expand!

I definitely think Joplin could handle it more than the other towns. I actually live in Webb City, and I don't think the town can handle what they have now, and it isn't even that big. I don't think that the other towns are large enough, nor really growing enough to need the land. I wonder why the city of Joplin didn't try to put the new sports complex by 249? It seems like that would be a development that would get quite a bit of people over there.

I think 940 has some personal / medical things going on right now. I have emailed him a few times and he says that he is in and out of town and will be back on soon. Other than that, I'm not real sure whats up with him...

I think they put the sports complex in the place that they did because they got a good deal on it. I dont think that you would see it on 249 because they want to save that for economic expantion and other things. 249 has a lot of potential coming up. It will be intresting to see how this plays out.
MODOT is doing some road work on 71 highway to get it up to standards. When its all done and 249 is open at 171, then it will be an interstate. 71 hwy turns into I-29 in KCMO. I heard that they havent decided if it will be called I-29, I-71 or I-249 yet.
