That round thingie is an Oak Apple, or Oak Gall formed by some species of Gall Wasp (Cynipidae). You'll find them in many sizes and colors. Some look like the one shown, others have a rough bumpy surface. There are over 750 species of this wasp and the galls they form differ from species to species. The species of Oak tree also makes a difference.
We had large oak trees in our yard back in Wisconsin but I had never seen an Oak Apple until we moved here. I spent weeks trying to identify the things and then went to the conservation department with them and learned more than I want to know.
Neither humans nor oak trees are harmed by growth or wasp.
