They are very plentiful on Table Rock Lake. They like to nest in large groups, called rookeries. There is a large rookery in Cape Fair near the James River Bridge. Pretty cool! It's fun to watch them fish!

yup thats an immature great blue....they were almost extinct here in the east as im sure they must have been out there.....DDT made it impossible to carry eggs thru a hatch.
They have come back strong in part due to conservation efforts like setting up rookeries. Took a while after DDT was banned but now their back.

There's a blue heron that hangs out in my back yard a lot......I've tried to sneak out the back door realllllllllllllllllllllllly quiet-like to get a photo of him, but he has amazing hearing.
I've only been able to get a few through the glass.

I think they're amazing birds.

I also have a gigantic woodpecker that shows up once in a while...

We have had Herons nest at the end of the lake near the dam. They also have nested near the end of one of the 'arms'. Fascinating birds to watch. Took pictures years ago, before digital and they are in a box somewhere. Took pictures a few days ago of one of the three Pileated Woodpeckers that hang around here. Beautiful bird. Largest of the woodpeckers around here. The Ivory billed woodpecker was on the extinct list for 60 years. However one had reportedly been sighted: The Story: The Search for the Ivory-bill - Big Woods Conservation Partnership

That is a tremendous sighting.

Default Cool!

I love woodpeckers! We have a pileated nest near our backyard and you can hear their territorial communications...it sounds like a jungle cry! Here is a great link that tells about the different kinds living in MO.

Missouri Woodpeckers

Great pictures mr.andmrs.kringle!! (Looking forward to meeting you at the next OTFCC?!?!!)
