German Community in Missouri
Hello one and all,
I did a search to make sure that I wasn't starting a parallel thread first, n "nuttin". So Here is my Question...What is the German Community Like in OLD MO? I know that in Minnesota they've got New Ulm, and I recall driving through MO that I had seen some road side signage alluding to some sort of sausage festivals and or wine festivals, that were either German, or German sponsored. Thanks in advance for the answer!

There are various fests (Oktober, Wurst) in the wine area around Washington and Hermann. Many people of German background emigrated to those areas and the St. Louis area, either to farm or to go into trade. Both sides of my wife's family is German by background, and both families were, mostly, small farmers outside St. Louis.
St. Louis, too, has a vigorous German heritage, although it's hard to find much of it. Bevo Mill is the traditional German restaurant there, and I think it recently reopened or remodeled or re-somethinged. It has a tie to the Busch family (of Anheuser-Busch).
Now, my mother's side of my family is German too, but they came from Germany to central Texas, where there's a vigorous German heritage. If you're ever in Austin or San Antonio, make a side trip to Fredericksburg, or New Braunfels for Wurstfest. Prost!

I've visited both Fredericksburg and New Braunfels and loved both towns! I'm a unabashed Germanophile.:-)

Fredricksburg, yes!!
I have fond memories of New Braunsfels (Schlitterbaun!!) and Fredricksburg (Altdorf Biergarten, on main st)!
Man, I bet the bluebonnets are blooming! I better go to the TX forum and see if they have any pictures yet!
Making me hungry!!! I think I am going to have to make Rouladen, spatzle, rotkohl and warmer kartoffelsalat (german potato salad) for dinner tomorrow night! Thanks!!
I am looking forward to a little tour of Missouri's Wine Country this spring, so will head to Hermann, for sure!

Also don't miss Strassenfest in St. Louis is August. St. Louis' German heritage might not be an everyday part of life, but for three days in August everybody is German!

Hermann is it! Lots of German settlers founded the town because it reminded them of the Rhine Valley. Really lovely and the best Oktoberfest in MO!
