Default Rural housebuying near St.Louis?

My dh is applying for a job in St.Louis (by the zoo). We have been to St.Louis a lot being from central IL, but we have never lived there. We are going to buy a house and we are looking for a house in the country or secluded with at least an acre and a 3+ br home (or in desperation, the ability to put on a trailer until we can build). ALL for under $130k.

Anyone have recommendations on communities/areas to look within 40 minutes of the zoo, I suppose. IL or MO areas work. Aso, anyone know about zoning? Like, can I have a chicken if it's zoned residential, etc.?

Welcome to the forum, and potentially (and hopefully) to Missouri! Don't want to cast doubt, but I imagine will be difficult to acquire that kind of property and be w/in 40 minute commute of the zoo area... There are places in IL - for example, Edwardsville and Columbia are ~40 minutes away. Fenton, MO is ~35 minutes away, while places such as Otto and Imperial can also be about that distance. But - as to how much property can be had for that amount of funds, hopefully someone else can assist. Of course, those times listed above are with minimum traffic/congestion... and w/ the construction on 40, and at times jams on 44/270 in the rush commute periods, those times can grow. Good luck!

I would look south of St. Louis along 55 near Festus, there you should be able to get what you desire.

Here's a place under 130 with three bedrooms and its one 3 acres.. check it out.

We've stayed in Festus before. Nice area. Only been there on vacations to St. Louis, though.

This one is $109k. It'll be about 50 minutes from St. Louis (Hillsboro) 3 BR, 2 BA

Lake Tishomingo is about 10 minutes away.

$125k 3 BR, 1.5 BA It might not be rural enough, though

Near Arnold Maybe 30 minutes from St. Louis

$119k, 3 BR, 1 BA about 35 minutes from St. Louis. According to the ad, though, the house needs a little TLC. The pictures look decent there. Looks like it has a lot of outdoor space.

Hope those are helpful.
