Hi,

One of my kids has a great opportunity to attend this Maryville university. My question is the crime in and around the university. We reside in a New England suburb with no crime so we are concerned with what we have read about the area. We have not visited but they are offering college at a lot less than I can get up here.

Would you send your child to that area?

Maryville could not be in a safer area if it tried. The St. Louis metro is among the safest metros in the country. Impoverished portions of the city are among the worst, and that’s all you hear about. Maryville is along the border of two very safe suburbs with million dollar housing.

I believe you're speaking of Maryville, the town in the Northwest part of the state. Look at the stats in Citidata for crime. Personal perspective: I interviewed there. Brought the family 'cause we were sure we'd relocate.
Have you ever been to a place that had such a weird vibe you wanted to get out ASAP? The hair on your neck stood up? That's Maryville. The University is poor. Your kid will hate you for the rest of their life if you send them there. "Nowheresville" is its nickname among students.
There's a state penitentiary there. When they have escapees the town is the only place to go. When they see the place they turn around and go back to prison.

I assume the OP is talking about Maryville University, which is located West Central St. Louis County among some of the wealthiest suburbs in the country. Your kid is probably more likely to get hurt in their bathroom versus be the victim of a violent crime in that area. The school has a decent reputation in the area, but it's kind of a commuter college (i.e there may not be a ton of out of state residents to bond with). What do they plan to major in?

Maryville University would indicate the school in Chesterfield, not Northwest MO State (which I can't imagine anyone not relatively close by having any interest in, we have FAR better state options available than that). I honestly don't know that much about Maryville. It has been mostly a commuter school, but even back in my day (early 90s) my good friend lived in dorms there. It has a good local rep and I imagine has certain programs that are a draw if you hear about the school in New England. I also think it's growing as I've watched their athletic area across from St. Luke's hospital grow and as a hockey parent, I know that they are adding a hockey program which will increase the non-local student body as well I imagine.

Maryville, Webster, Fontbonne, UMSL all commuter schools. Except for UMSL all are very overpriced as well.

St. Louis area needs a bigger state university presence other than UMSL. That is why all the universities are so expensive because there really isn't any competition. Minus UMSL gotta go to SEMO, Columbia or Springfield, or smaller school Rolla.

Maryville University and Webster are both about the same price and expensive. IMO all the colleges in Stl are very overpriced. Wash U too even though it's a great school charges absurd prices along with SLU.

As for NWMO like NEMO just seems like a depressing, boring place to live. Mostly flat, colder winters and nothing to do unlike the southern half of the state that has mild winters, warm climate, the Ozarks, St. Louis and better scenery. The northern half of the state seems to rarely get mentioned in anything.
