Salem, MO
Hi everyone! So I have been looking for more information on Salem, MO and the surrounding areas. I searched the forum, but didn't find too much about it. Can anyone give any info? Schools, churches, how close to the nearest Walmart ? Stuff like that? I did see there were a couple of saddle clubs, which is great! What about 4-H? Active in that area?
Thanks in advance!

The people in that area are quite pleasant and friendly. Good jobs are very few and far between. However, it does appear that the local economy and population are growing slightly in recent years. The Mark Twain National Forest is fairly close to the town.
Here is some information about the town:
Welcome to the official Salem, Missouri website!
A greater amount of shopping is found in nearby Rolla, which is a University town.

Used to live not far from there, and rambled through Salem on path to other areas. The town has seen some [ie: very little] growth, altho' not a lot. As Plains10 rightly said, employment options are scarce, unless you know somewhere specifically, or someone, might be tad harder to find such - if you are looking, as your post didn't mention that topic. As to the other items, Salem has a newer Super Wal-Mart, and the other normal smaller town type stores. Rolla is ~35 minutes away, on fairly good recently redone highway, but while there is more shopping there, 'more' is a relative word... The biggest attraction, IMHO to Salem is that its jumping point to a lot of beautiful and areas, including the MTNF, Ozark Riverways, multiple springs, the mining district, horse-related activities, etc. Good luck!

i've livedin the salem area all my life so i know what's going on around here fairly well i think. it's all in what you're looking for really, you can find good and bad wherever you are, depending on your outlook.the salem area doesn't have a lotof job opportunities but people seem to be moving into the area, to retire mainly how ever it has led to a lot of diversity amoung us. they are coming because of cheap land,
low taxes (compared to the rest of the country).
the schools are ok here again it depends on who you talk to. i have found that school is what you make it. if you work hard it doesn't matter much where you go you will probably succeed vice versa.
try these sites they might help.

I live in Salem and it's a very wonderful place to live.
My children attended school here and graduated here, They have an excellent 4H and FFA group. There is so much to do if your an outdoors person. Were 10 miles from some of the best Trout fishing in this state and several surrounding states. The hunting is good they just built a new bowling alley, but if you want to see a movie you have to drive to Rolla, We have Wall-Mart super store here and several small town stores that you can find just about anything in... Would love to welcome you to the area!

Thank you jeanie! It looks like a beautiful area! I can get everything I need from Wal-Mart! :-) We have seen some beautiful places online for sale around Salem. Some seem really expensive in comparison to others. Any thoughts on that anyone?

Also, I don't imagine there are too many job opportunities in Salem, but what about Rolla? Is it a fairly large town?

Depends on what type of work you do!
You may want to look at US Food Service Web site!
Rolla had Briggs & Stratton and they closed down recently and put several people off of work. We've heard rumors that something big will be coming back into that building...
They have a very good hospital and one of the best oncology radiation departments in MIssouri (no joke) they've won several awards. Hope you never have to use them!
IM me I'll be more then glad to help out where ever I can!
My husband and I are actually thinking of moving to Montana !!! Scarey sense we've lived her most all of our lives!

Rolla has about 16,000 people, and better employment opportunities than Salem. I went to UMR (now Missouri S & T) in Rolla for the past 4 years, which is the prominent engineering university in Missouri. Rolla also has a few pretty good places to eat...including El Rodeo (which I hear changed its name), a really good mexican restaurant, and I still believe that even after living in Texas; Alex's, which has awesome pizza; and even a few sushi places.
I didn't know Briggs and Stratton closed down, but I'm sure that really hurt the economy, especially in addition to the cutting back at USGS in Rolla, although I'm not sure if that went through or not.
Anyway, Rolla does have a fairly large school system, the university with around 6,000 students, plus the hospital systems, and other places to work I'm sure, but it really depends on what type of job you are looking for. As mentioned above, highway 72 from Salem to Rolla was recently improved and is a pretty easy drive, with little traffic, so commuting will be easy.
