It's not nearly hot and humid yet! We haven't even turned on the AC yet just opened the windows and let the breezes in. This last week has had some absolutely glorious weather. Just wait till August....

OK the last couple days have been humid-thinking of turning on the AC just to get the moisture out of the house.

Thanking you-Wionee
I lived a few minutes from Joplin Missouri from 1991-1998.

Nice little town. Easy to get around in. About 1-1.5 hours from Branson Missouri which has a TON to do. About the same from Tulsa which has a ton to do. About 2 hours or so from Kansas City - one of my favorite cities (lived there 1984-1989. KC has more fountains in it than any other city in the world).

Joplin and the area has had alot of problems with lead poisoning. High levels of lead in the soil, was a big lead mining area.

Lots of tornados - but hardly anything really ever happens with tornados. The come quick and go quick and usually hit unpopulated areas. Weather changes alot. I remember around January 1996 it was 70 degrees in the morning, dropped to below freezing and then had a tornado at night. The Tornado tore up a bass pro-shop boat factory east of Springfield - but no other real damage.

Very white. Not much ethnicity. Monett Missouri is 11% Hispanic. I tend to like places with alot of ethnicities, I like melting pots. So for me it was a bit too white (although I am white).

Has some college there.

People are pretty friendly. All the small towns have some charm and lots of small town festivals. I think its Stottsville Missouri with the Sturnsy bears, and Mt.Vernon Missouri with the Apple Butter makin' days, and Aurora Missouri with Hound dawg days. Eureka springs Arkansas is not too far and is a cute town with mineral spring hot tubs, history and cute shops.

I'm not from the area, but when I see a bitter rant on these forums about a particular place in Missouri it bothers me. FYI I think Carthage is a nicer town than Joplin, and as far as "sinnin" goes that happens absolutley EVERYWHERE and if you think it is bad in Joplin visit New Orleans or Las Vegas. And as far as the crazy weather goes, I think you'll find more extreme and volatile weather further north on the plains (KC, Omaha, ect).

Thanks for the info... As far as the "sinnin" remember this is SUPPOSED to be the bible belt. Practice what you preach, of course thats all nonsense.

I have 1 year and 5 months left down here and can't wait to go back to the north. Rain, tornadoes every WEEK! The heat and humitity make outdoor activitys impossible. All I ever see is closed up cars and houses with a/c on already because of it. I turned the a/c on three times last year in wis. ISH. If I could sleep for a year I would.... And with gas at 4-5 a gallon wouldn't be more practical for these Ok and Kansas people to maybe move here?????

Joplin has a good sized mall with Macy's, Sears and JC Penney as its anchor stores. There is a food court and several clothing retailers like American Eagle, Hot Topic, Maurice's and Old Navy. There is also a Radio Shack, Spencer's and other typical mall stores. A new strip mall opened last year with Kohl's, Bed Bath and Beyond and other stores, which attached to the Target. There are several smaller strip malls around town with restaurants and other stores.
Joplin has a wide variety of restaurants from standard chains to locally owned. I think there are 3 sit-down or take-out only Chinese restaurants and
about 4 buffets. We also have 3 Japanese and 4 Thai restaurants. And numerous barbecue and Mexican choices.
