Right you are; east of I-35 and north of U.S. 36.
Aw jeez, Kareybear, when am I moving to St. Joe? Well I've got to get our house sold here. We put it on the market two weeks ago. This afternoon we noticed a couple more people take flyers from our "For Sale" sign holder out front.
I didn't succeed in my first two attempts to find work in the area, but I'm working on my third one, and it pays quite a bit more than the first two would have. I'm hoping they call me to schedule another interview.
My wife and I both know what house in St. Joe we'd like to buy. So if our house sells, we'll be there by no later than the end of March (right after Easter). Figure between early January and late March if all goes according to plan. We REALLY want to get back there and start fresh!
Maybe you should send a private message to StJoeFanatic and let her know you might be interested in St. Joe as well!

There are lots of different Amish orders also. I think you should walk up and start up a conversation. I do it all the time. They are very freindly people generally. If you hit a shy one like yourself, try again.
Does anyone know what part of the country these folks in Bowling green came from?
Many of my relatives and my Grand parents were and are Amish and Mennonite.
I hope I helped out.

This is my first posting on city data but I use the site often.
More conservative Mennonites can be recognized by their dress and would probably love for you to approach them. If you start up a conversation about quilting you might be awhile.
Other Mennonites, like my wife and I would not look different than anyone else.
As with any group of people, there is good and not so good. If you find them less then friendly you just approached the wrong person. Try again. Stan

Amish Country Store in La Plata
I am so excited and happy that I gotta share. My first trip to the amish general store. I went kinda crazy in there. My girls and I had a good time in there. Then I went to amish home that was advertising Dozen brown eggs for a dollar and homemade butter for 2.50. My girls and I were fasinated by the buggy horse and farm animals. The gentleman was very nice and he also does custom beautiful furniture that I got to see. I was hoping to meet the family be we didn't but I am still happy. My kids loved looking at the duck and petting the dog. Well I wanted to share. For Easter break I am going to Rutledge where the Minnonite are and check out there store and hopefully a flea market is going on at that time. It will be a two hour drive but the girls seems to go for it.

We have several Mennonite famlies here in Salem Mo. They all drive black vehicles and are very open to talking to anyone that want's to strike up a conversation. They carry Cell phones and although they don't use internet they fax back and forth. They don't spend much in other shops around town but are offended if you don't buy their products. The problem is most of the people around here are very handy with a hammer, nail and needle so they are pretty self reliant on thier own.

The Wilder's house is in Mansfield. There are two different bunches of Amish in Seymour and they don't have a whole lot to do with each other. The ones on C highway are the friendliest. The others, not so much.

There is another group that may be mistaken for Amish or Mennonite. They are the German Baptist Brethren and are also in Missouri. All of these denominations are anabaptist--that is, the Brethren groups, the Mennonites, and the Amish. All that means is that they believe in adult baptism or "believer's baptism". Believe it or not, this could get you killed by the state in Germany of that time. All of them believe that all war is sin, so they study peace issues in depth. Even the most mainstream of them hold simplicity and community as important ideals.
The GBB are split off from The Church of the Brethren (COB--also found in MO and more mainstream) and The Brethren Church (not sure if they're in MO, but also more mainstream). The GBB have a lifestyle similar to the Amish, though I'm not aware of what the differences are. These Brethren are not related in any way to the Plymouth Brethren, the group that developed the Scofield Bible. The Brethren denominations are 300 years old this year and originated in Schwarzenau, Germany. None of them are very well known in MO, but as a member of the COB, I can say that I've never met a more loving group of people. Unfortunately we don't have a church in St. Louis.
