Hey there lady - from one of my favourite sources, good info and some gripping videos & photos of what is occurring upstream of Sainte Gen:
Iowa Town Struggles to Stay Afloat Amid Floods : NPR
And from your neck of the woods, errr,,, swamp:
seMissourian.com: Story: Scott, Mississippi, New Madrid counties prepare for river flooding
[/editorize: maybe someday soon humans will learn that they can't control Mother Nature - she is relentless, and forceful - they can only work with her, not manipulate, as she will eventually overpower our vain attempts. /editorization]

Your editorial sounds like exactly what I've been saying for a long while, and also what this Post guy said:
STLtoday - The flood this time

I just got back from a trip to Des Moines and then over to Muscatine and the Quad Cities in Iowa. Normally we go up 61 thru Hannibal but this time we had to take a different route putting about 1,000 miles on a rental car in 3 days.
I saw firsthand the devastion, roads washed out, water is just everywhere.
One of my customers has had to put it's several of it's staff in a local Holiday Inn otherwise they would have had a 100 mile one way trip to work.
We have offices in Cedar Rapids and it's a total wreck. Water got in the basement and first floor. Lot's of gear was lost...desk top PCs, test equipment, etc.
The good news is that people are pulling together in a big, big way. Times like these really show that great American fighting spirit.

I have been praying for those folks. I spent 3 weeks in Mo in '93, bagging, it was a really profound experience.
I had been watching the flooding on tv, and crying. When they showed what was happening to Ste Gen, I lost it.
I saw people I knew about to lose their homes.
DH went to the bank, got $1000, and told me to go home, his mom would take care of DD, who was 18 months old at the time.
Helping the folks I knew was the only way I knew that I could give back to the community, I am very glad that the folks in Iowa are taking care of their own.

Levee fails in Winfield, MO
Just found out about this grim news: the levee in Winfield, located on Highway 79 north of St. Charles County, failed this morning, putting homes there and downriver at serious risk of flooding. May God help these people and make their lives normal again!
Source: Flood threatens 100 homes in Mo. after levee loss
They're trying like crazy to build a 4-foot high sandbag wall to protect Winfield's residential area the best they can.

I flew in from Battlecreek, MI on a Southwest flight this afternoon; as we came in we flew up the river and circled out by St. Charles. I had a great view of the flooding. Once again, water everywhere. You can plainly see that the river has retaken it's natural flood plain. It amazes me that we continue to allow folks to rebuild in areas that have potential to flood. It seems these 100 years floods are coming about every 15 years lately.
