Holden, Missouri = Bigotry
I'm hoping this is not typical of all small Missouri towns, but this hamlet located a little southeast of Kansas City is perhaps one the most bigoted towns I have ever been to. From business owners to residents, if you are not the "norm" (white, straight, Christian), you are treated with much hate and spite. The town seems to be lost in the pre-1960s era of segregation and lifestyle. The motto, "Small Town, Big Future" applies only to those who fit the norm mentioned. Avoid and tell your friends to avoid, do not give the bigoted, racist and hypocritcal business owners a dime or this town your time.

1 person/business does not a town/city/village make. please dont make assumptions about people you dont know. just say avoid "enter bad things here" and leave it there. im sure that you are generalizing a bunch of people that dont deserve to have their name sullied. and for your information i am white, straight, catholic.

I hope you're not exaggerating. You may not be, but I wouldn't call a place bigoted unless I spent a lot of time there.
And just because a town is white, straight, Catholic/Protestant, that doesn't mean that it's necessarily bigoted. That's a stereotype that's not always true.
If you did feel mistreated, I'm sorry, but I also hope you're not overreacting.

Ther are a few bigots in Holden. Not the whole town i hope. I too am white; but handicapped. I have been taunted as i walked down the sidewalk in Holden. A long time ago but it is the only time in my whole life that it was done that way.
When you get down to the east end of town on the curve; that is where the troublemakers congregate and hangout. Like i said it was quite awhile back. I assessed them to be locals with poor education and not very wordly. Not at all painting everyone with this brush.
Bigotry in Holden? I say there is plenty.imo

There are bigots everywhere people. Every single part of the country has them. No town or city is bigot-free.

Kalij - on one hand, I welcome your post, as it helps bring out a potential problem in an area that should be dealt with and addressed, as I do not like any at all behaviour as you allude to in your post. However, with that said, you have made a fairly broad sweeping generalization post, stating that an entire town is of one mind, a fairly negative mind at that, without any proof or substantial evidence. Granted, such would be somewhat hard to provide - these are of course your experiences - yet,,, there is nothing substantial within your post stating when this occurred, exactly what occurred, under what conditions this happened, etc. No offense, but being a first post, without much to go on here, it then seems kinda trollish, ya know?

The population of Holden, according to City-Data, is 2,510. So though not a large town, that's still a lot of folks who are being painted with such a broad brush. I'd like to hear more details. I hope the OP is not going to be a hit-and-run poster. The other thing that arouses a lot of suspicion in me is that if Holden is predominantly Christian--and I'm confident it is--they would give you the shirts off their backs to be helpful and welcoming. So which is it? Either Holden really isn't as "Christian" as the OP makes it out to be, or most likely the OP is using this town as a convenient vehicle in which to make a gratuitous swipe at its residents and those of the Christian faith.
Well that's all I have to say unless the OP does a follow-up post here. And if he or she doesn't, then I'll just have to make my own excursion to Holden once we're moved back there and make my own independent analysis and judgment. And maybe spend copious amounts of money there if I detect no racism or bigotry! :P

I may have to drop in this area for a pit stop on the way to the Golden Ox in KC. I'll make my own observations for myself. Stereotyping for a whole city? I've seen a lot of MO and never came close to such a place as the OP described. Innocent until proven guilty. And in fact any other state.
