KETTLE FULL OF GOLD PIECES

St. Joseph, Mo., Jul 17---A kettle full of counterfeit $5 gold pieces was captured by officers in a brickyard in the north part of the city Thursday. Much counterfeit coin of this description has been put into circulation of late and although government secret service operatives have been diligently at work they have been greatly mystified by the clever operations of the crooks. Several men and two women have been convicted of counterfeiting here, but new spurious coin continues to be issued. The kettle of gold discovered was all ready for the gold plating machine, the work in other respects being cleverly executed.

QULIN BANK ROBBED

Qulin, Mo., Feb 3-- The Bank of Qulin was held up shortly after 3 o'clock yesterday afternoon by two armed men, who escaped with $3,000 in cash, after locking Assistant Cashier Irvin Walter, Deputy Sheriff C.W. Yates and a patron of the bank in the vault.
The three men were the only occupants of the bank when the bandits entered with drawn revolvers. They forced Walter to unlock a chest which contained the money, then imprisoned the trio and made their escape on horses which Yates and another man left standing in front of the bank.
Nearly a half hour elapsed before Walter, with the aid of a screwdriver which was in the vault, succeeded in removing the combination and effecting the release of himself and his companions.
An alarm was immediately sent out throughout the surrounding country and a posse started in pursuit of the bandits.

NAB BANDIT SUSPECTS

Poplar Bluff, Mo., Feb 3--- Otis Brown, formerly deputy sheriff of Butler county, and Rolly Nicholson, who are said to have been implicated in the bank robbery at Qulin yesterday afternoon, were captured near there last night after being wounded when fired on by a posse.
Brown's condition is believed serious. Members of the posse said they fired when the men refused to surrender. A third man escaped. Brown and Nicholson were brought here following their capture. Neither would discuss the robbery. No money was found in their possession.
