CHARGE MISUSE OF MAILS

N.F. Nail and M.B. Raney, charged with using the mails to defraud, are in the custody of United States Marshal William Morsey. Nail was brought from Norwood, Mo. Raney was arrested on his farm near Hartville, Mo.
It is claimed that Nail and Raney are members of a gang which has been systematically robbing large wholesale firms in St. Louis, Kansas City and Chicago. Rod Raney, father of M.B. Raney, is the alleged leader of the gang.
Raney was formerly the Collector of Wright County, and had a good commercial standing. It is claimed that upon the strength of his reputation he would order goods from different firms, and, receiving them, would distribute them among members of the gang, who would take the booty to other cities and dispose of it.
Six months ago federal officers located the elder Raney in Wright County. Raney opened fire on the officers, and there was an exchange of shots, Raney was injured but escaped.

SHOT EACH OTHER DEAD

Gallatin, Mo., Sep 30---A duel occurred at the Wabash junction, two miles east of Gallatin, Thursday night, between Constable William Parker and a tramp thief known as Roy Ripley. The latter had been guilty of petty larceny and was being pursued by the constable, when he turned and showed fight. The officer stood his ground and each man emptied a .38 cal. Smith & Wesson at the other, the last shot from each proving death to his foe.
Parker fell dead with a ball through his left lung. Ripley ran a short distance and was found dead with a ball through the left side of his body.
William Parker was a young man of exemplary habits and a brave officer. He leaves a widow. The tramp was a desperate character about whom little is known. He recently served a jail sentence here.
