HOW THE JAMES BOYS OPERATE

Jesse and Frank go into a farming community and become acquainted with the men, and pick out certain ones, and after a careful study of their character, ask them to join with them in a particular robbery.

If they are willing they agree to give them all the way from $100 to $500 each. They are required to hold the horses and fire off guns and raise a racket while Jesse and Frank, with perhaps one or two experienced trusties, do the robbing.

Immediately after the completion of the job, the farmers are paid the stipulated sum, whether the haul is large or small, and then they ride to their homes, while the James boys strike out to a place of safety.

The men who have been inveigled into the job are never asked to go into a similar undertaking a second time, but they ever afterwards remain under the power and fear of the noted robber chieftains, upon whom they dare not squeal, for by doing so they would give themselves away.

They always stand ready to protect and secrete the James boys when they are hard pressed. This explains why the James boys have so many friends in Missouri, and why it is so difficult to catch them.
It is as hard to find them in Missouri as it would be to find a needle in a haystack.

JOHN M GLOVER FIGHTS MILITIA

Ex-Missourian Defies Soldiers To Invade His Office At Cripple Creek And Disarm Him

Cripple Creek, Colo.,Dec 28--Considerable excitement was occasioned here today by the action of Attorney John M Glover, formerly a congressman from Missouri, in defying the military, barricading himself in his office and only surrendering after receiving a bullet wound in the arm.

Colonel Verdeckberg, commanding the militia forces in the district, today received a letter from Mr. Glover, denying the legality of the recent order for the surrender of arms by the citizens. In his letter Glover referred to Governor Peabody as " a cheap anarchist." He declared that he had two guns in his office and defied the military to take them from him.

Colonel Verdeckberg at once dispatched Major Naylor with a squad to capture the attorney and his weapons. The lawyer's office was found barricaded, and Glover appeared with a revolver, declaring that he would shoot the first man who attempted to break down the door.

The place was surrounded by troops and orders were given to shoot the man if he appeared with his gun again. Later Glover appeared and several shots were exchanged, the attorney being wounded in the arm, after which he was captured.

He looks like the kind that would put up a fight.

DICK WILLIAMS SHOOTS BUD FLEMING IN FIGHT

Last Saturday night at Knob Lick, Dick Williams and Bud Fleming got into a rough and tumble fight in which Fleming seems to have gotten the better of Williams. They were separated twice by friends, and after the second separation Antoine Mullersman got between the two men, when Williams drew a gun and reaching around Mullersman, shot Fleming twice in the arm and once in the side, inflicting serious injury.

Deputy Sheriff Adams was surprised of the shooting and went to Knob Lick to arrest Williams, arriving there about 12 o'clock, when he learned that Williams had started to Farmington to give himself up. He came in Sunday morning and surrendered and is now in jail, held to await the results of the shots.
