FIVE BANDITS TAKE $17,523

Granite City, Ill., Jun 20.---Five armed motor bandits held up John Metro, driver for the American Railway Express Co. here today, seized a payroll containing $17,523 belonging to the National Lead Co. and sped away in a touring car.
Metro, accompanied by a guard, was driving from the Chicago & Eastern Illinois station in a small automobile. Near the heart of the business district a large motor car containing five men halted directly in their path. Three robbers leaped from the car, covered Metro and the guard with revolvers, and seized the package containing the money which was shipped from St. Louis. They leaped into their machine and made a clean getaway through the maze of traffic. Police immediately threw out a dragnet.

The Jasper News June 26, 1902

MR. CARNS' HORSE STOLEN

A horse belonging to John Carns, living northeast of Jasper, was stolen from the hitchrack, in Jasper last Saturday night and up to the present writing no clue to the thief or the whereabouts of the horse has been found.
Carns rode the animal to town to attend the band concert. He tied it to the hitchrack east of the city hall. About 10 o'clock he went around and found it still there, but a short time afterward when he went to start for home, his nag was missing. He searched around town for it, but failing to find the animal, came to the conclusion that it had been stolen.
Cards were sent out to the neighboring towns describing the missing horse, with the hope of apprehending the thief, but up to last reports no clue to the animal has been discovered.
The horse was black and 16 hands high. The saddle on the horse is reported to be quite valuable.

RATHER MYSTERIOUS DISAPPEARANCE

It is reported that a man named F. Noel, who has been in the employ of Logan & Kirkham, the well-known tie buyers, very suddenly disappeared last Friday.
He had in his possession funds amounting to between $1,000 and $1,500, and it is supposed the temptation of such a sum of ready cash was quite too much for his honesty. We understand he has been traced to Glenwood where he took the train.
We learn that the sons of Mr. Noel are making efforts to arrange the matter and to re-imburse the owners of the cash they lost. We are not informed of what efforts if any have been made to follow the missing man.

MURDER AND SUICIDE

A terrible tragedy was enacted at the Hardin farm, 4 miles from Tipton, Wednesday afternoon of last week, in which Frank Ocheka, a farm hand, murdered Edward Hardin, his employer, and then blew the whole top of his own head to atoms. The deeds were committed with a double-barreled shotgun. The actual details of the tragedy are unknown, but it is supposed that Ocheka shot Hardin in the yard and then committed suicide in the house. Hardin was 60 years old and a bachelor. Ocheka was a stranger and had only worked for Hardin for a few weeks.
Indications point to the fact that the murderer was under the influence of liquor when he committed the deed.

The News Boy (Scott County) August 31, 1895

TERRORIZING THE COMMUNITY

James Albright, whose parents live near Bertrand, is wanted by the authorities of both Mississippi and Scott counties to answer to charges of assault with intent to kill.

About two weeks ago he was at Diehlstadt and met Charles Jones, a railroad man, who was on a railroad velocipede. Grabbing up several spikes, Albright waited until the car was in a few feet of him, then began throwing the spikes at Jones, two of which struck him on the head, inflicting painful wounds. When Jones stopped the car to defend himself, Albright compelled him at the point of his revolver, to remount his car and depart.
His next victim was a neighbor by the name of Story, whom he beat almost to death in his own house.

Last week Sheriff Batts and Deputy Gupton went down to arrest him. They surrounded the Albright home and were about to enter when young Albright jumped up from his hiding place, about 100 yards away and began to run. Sheriff Batts called for him to halt and fired a shot at him, but Jim disappeared in the woods.

Joe Albright, a brother, is with Jim and they defy the officers. They say they will not be taken alive. The people in the neighborhood of Bertrand and Diehlstadt are terrorized and refuse to give the officers any information as to their whereabouts, fearing that the Albrights will do them great harm.

It is reported that they went to the house of W.L. Harper and threatened to kill him because he had given information about them to the officers.
They still remain in the neighborhood and make no "bones" of entering the towns as soon as the officers disappear. They are kept well informed as to the movement of the officers and it will probably take a strong posse to capture them.
Last Friday the officers of both Mississippi and Scott counties were after them without success. An organized effort by the officers of these counties should be made to bring them to justice.
