George A Vincent

He was a notorious forger who forged over $500,000 worth of bonds of New York railroads in 1872. He was sent to Sing Sing but escaped after setting the prison bakery on fire. He travelled to Germany, Scotland and London forging drafts on New York banks before he was caught in London and sentenced to five years at Dartmoor under a fake name. When he was released he went to Montreal but was recognized and fled to San Francisco and then throughout the south before arriving in St.Louis. There, he was arrested for trying to pass a forged draft for $1,000 at the Boatman's Savings bank and sent to the Missouri Penitentiary where he was later released and sent back to Sing Sing.

An ingenious thief entered the home of Nathan Scarritt, 1300 North Liberty Street, Independence, Mo., yesterday afternoon, packed a suitcase full of Mr. Scarritt's clothes, tied them to the handle bars of a bicycle he found handy and rode away. Neighbors saw him about the place, but believed he was the caretaker in the absence of the family. No trace of the thief could be found.

Fred Biebusch was a counterfeiter who was arrested in St.Louis in 1874 and sentenced to 10 years.

BURGLARS

Los Angeles Herald March 12, 1897

St. Joseph, Mo., Mar.11---On the night of Feb. 7, 1896, the state bank of Savannah, Mo., was entered by masked robbers who bound and gagged the watchman, after which they looted the bank, securing between $15,000-$18,000 in money and bonds. Red O'Brien and William Loughbridge, two of the most famous crooks and burglars in the country, were captured in California sometime later and charged with the crime. The trial of O'Brien terminated at Savannah tonight when at 9:30 the jury returned a verdict of guilty and assessed his punishment at 14 years in the penitentiary. His wife, who was present, created a scene when the verdict was announced.
