Question Central A/C Unit Recommendations Please?

We are looking for a 3 1/2 ton central air system for our house. (Our a/c died two weeks ago - and I won't lie, it's July/August in St. Louis... it ain't pretty!)

My husband is a do-it-yourself'er and is trying to find out some recommended brands. Can anyone give feedback on Whirlpool and who manufactures them? We have a lead on one of those and before putting the $ out for that, wanted to get feedback on that line and see if we can find out who it is made by. Any other great brands to go with? Any to definitely avoid?

Looking for a deal for an outright sale too. Any help would be greatly appreciated! Thanks so much!!

Get highest SEER model ya can - may cost more upfront, but payback/efficiency will be gooder than other lower rated models. Of course, look for Energy Star too.

If ya can't put in a geothermal system, for a regular unit I'd recommend a TRANE, altho' if you have a very good installer, no shortcuts, etc. Goodman brands can be very good too [I had heat pump model/version installed when in AL - worked great].

Might check out:
Search and Compare Air Conditioners, Boilers and Furnaces
Central Air Conditioners : ENERGY STAR
Central Air Conditioner: Whole House Air Conditioner, Central AC

Good luck!
