Default Nevada, Mo info?

I may be taking a job in the Nevada, MO and nearby areas. I'm trying to figure some budget items, and need some info. What cable, phone, and high-speed internet providers serve the area and what are typical costs for these services? What is the availability of apartments and/or houses to rent and what are typical costs? For rentals, are there particular companies (e.g., real estate) that would be the best sources for what's available? Thanks.

I'm almost an hour from Nevada so unfortunately, I can't help with any of the information you need. I just wanted to say, Nevada seems like a very nice town. I have driven through it many times, and antique shopped there, too. There's a small college in town (Cottey) and I imagine that may indicate a decent rental market. Best of luck!

The cable company was just bought out. It used to be Charter (based out of St. Louis, MO) but it switched to another name, same service though. I think our bill (including all the kid channels) runs around $70/mo? (Hubby pays all the bills) Phone service is AT&T but we use an Internet based phone service (magic jack) because it's much cheaper. Internet options can vary....we have AT&T DSL, but we live right in town, near the library. DSL is not available in all areas so you might have to go with a satellite provider or there's another little company in town that offers a different type of technology but you have to live near their tower to use the service (similar to getting a cell phone signal in terms of technology).

The houses....what can I say about the houses? Most are old and crappy. lol Maybe it's the "city" girl coming out in me (not originally from any place close to here), but all of the houses seem like they were built in the 1940s and have NEVER been updated or were updated around 1970. There are SOME newer houses that were built in the area (you can tell because they look more modern...say around the 1990s, maybe early 2000s) but not a lot. Certain parts of town are "ok" while others are ghetto as hell.

Cottey College is an all girl school, by the way. That's something I just recently learned and thought it was very interesting.

Grocery stores....Ramey's and Wood's are the 2 stores besides Wally World. They're kind of over priced and in my opinion, do not have a very good selection. There are no fruit stands, farmer markets or anything of the sort.

For shopping, there are a few SMALL resale shops, a few shoe shops, a couple of Dollar Stores and that's about it.

There is only ONE drug store in town (that I know of) besides Walmart, and that's a small drug store. The name escapes me at the moment.

For food, you have your typical McDonald's, Subway, Dairy Queen, Hardee's, Pizza Hut, Dominos and a KFC/Taco Bell location. That's it. Oh and there's a Mexican restaurant in the square, it is THE BOMB. SO GOOD! And I'm a VERY picky eater. Their fried ice cream is to die for! There is also a VERY good Chinese place, called China Chef or something like that (it has the word "Chef" in the name). I think there's a donut shop. Those are all of your options (very limited).

I do like the clinic and hospital in town, they're convenient enough. I won't say they have the best doctors, but they do try their best. I personally would not let any of them operate on me or a family member, I'd drive to a larger area (like KC) for something like that.

So basically, if you're from a big city or want the conveniences of a big city, be prepared to drive. Pittsburg is a college town, or you can drive to Joplin (about an hour south) or Kansas City (1 hour 45 mins) north.

Oh and the water here is VERY disgusting. Don't drink out of a fountain. It tastes like bleach, pure chlorinated bleach water. Gross, gross, gross.
