actually, Joplin is out of the "lead belt" area of Mizzou, that is over by Potosi, on the other side of the state, so not quite sure why this is an issue?

Joplin is a nice town. If you are worried about water drink bottled. Joplin is a middle sized college town with a large university and a couple of smaller colleges. It has a mall, a couple of strip malls and most of the national chain stores like Old Navy and Best Buy. It has a couple of hospitals, pet hospitals, all of the major cell phone stores, Walmart, Sam's Club, Holiday Inn, Denny's and most of the familar places you see when you travel. It has a diverse religious and cultural nature. The area as a whole offers many scenic/photo opportunities. It is located an hour from Grand Lake in Grove, OK., an hour from Branson, about 90 minutes from Eurkea Sprins, 2 hours from Kansas City, 4 hours from St. Louis and about 3 hours from Lake of the Ozarks. There is also all kinds of activitiies in the four state area.
You will not be disappointed or bored if you do not want to be.. But, there is a caveat. Joplin is not like the town you live in so expect to be a ltitle homesick until you get used to it. All things considered, Joplin is not a bad place to live or raise a family.

Yeap, that is the Tri-State Lead District, and as GraniteStater stated, was mined many years ago [~1860's-1960's]... won't bore yas w/ the geological details of the three Lead-mining districts w/in MO [Tri-State and the two "Belts" here], but suffice to say that there is unfortunately an ecological price being paid for the past transgressions of below-modern day standards of mining practices in the Joplin area - much worse IMHO than what is/has occurred w/in the 'Old' or esp. the 'New' Lead Belt, both which are very much improved mining practices. So, there will be contamination, and the necessary clean-up and remediations, to minimize further damage to environment and human health. Not trying to scare, but as a tree-hugging dabbling geologist I desire that mining, as it is necessary for modern conveniences and necessities be done with a strict eye to keep any damages to water, air, soil, fauna, and flora to absolute bare minimum. Shame that we need to pay now for the mistakes made those years ago. Sorry for the editorializing... Anyhow, yes, there are some issues in that area [actually in just about any mining or for that matter land where industry has set up shop, to various degrees], but with proper education and awareness a person can live happily, healthy, and safely.
For some interesting info:
TRI-STATE LEAD AND ZINC DISTRICT
PS: for those that might wanna get up on arms about mining, esp. Lead... remind yourself again just why ya don't have to crank your vehicle,,, in a cold winter morning! Or how the nasty radiation from a CRT screen ain't gonna hurt ya, since the Lead compounds in the glass protect from such damage.
