Default Missouri Death Records

Missouri Digital Heritage : Birth and Death Records

This site is pretty useful, or at least has been for me. Not all records are online yet. 1910-1957 seems to be much more complete than pre-1910, but if you need info about a family member, it's much fun to search. I've found about 20 ancestor's death certificates this way. Unfortunately, not all states offer free records online. Most you have to spend like $20 through a genealogy site, or you have to pay the city for the record (and even then you usually have to be a very close relative.) I'm trying to find some records for family in Chicago and it's about to drive me insane.

Genealogy is very interesting, but it's a pain. It's taking a while because I have no money to pay ancestry.com for records that probably don't exist.

Enjoy the site. Any other genealogy frustrations here?

Default Death Records

Getting your hands on a copy of a death certificate or other birth records can be difficult. Many countries, states, counties and cities handle the process for ordering public records differently. You can search death records at http://deathrecordsonline.org

Don't forget to check the GenWeb sites for the counties in which your ancestors lived. Thousands of volunteers (I am one of them) spend hours researching, coordinating and verifying information and there is no fee.

Go to www.usgenweb.org for a list of states, and from each state, a list of counties or you can go directly to your state by using the two letter abrievation - CA for California, MA for Massachusetts, etc. The Missouri site is www.mogenweb.org.

I coordinate Howell County MoGenWeb.

Another very helpful site is the tomb stone registry. Go to www.findagrave.com. You can look for either an individual or a cemetery. Some parts of the country are better covered than others. It is a slow process but again, thousands of volunteers are plodding through cemeteries and indexing what they find. Others are photographing tombstones and in some cases, entering information from obits or newspaper notices.

Sadly this site doesn't do a very good job of sorting out searches. For example, I did a search for my grandfather's records using the town and state in which he died and it found two people who never lived there and are not connected in any way.

AND this is NOT a free service. To get additional information, one has to pay.

The Missouri records at the site I listed above are free.

Few other sources are.

Unfortunately, I have not found free records for Illinois, which would be helpful for a few of my ancestors death records.

The Missouri records 1910-1958 are free, and fairly complete. Some records I still have not found. The records pre-1910 are sparse and harder to find, often due to loss of records, records that cannot be read, etc.

GenWeb websites are also very good. Sometimes you can find things like marriage records. Some sites also offer cemetery records.

Also Free:

Federal census schedules for Missouri are available on microfilm for census years 1830 through 1930. The exception is the 1890 census, which was destroyed by fire.

The 1890 census being destroyed by fire has caused me issues in finding out who my great-great-grandfather was.

Looks like you've been at this as long as I have. I was really lucky. My father's name was Merrill. Long ago, someone write the Merrill Memorial, a two volume book that followed the early Merrills who came here from England forward to the late 1800s, early 1900s in some cases. I had gone back as far as I could and was at an impasse. I finally got my hands on a digital copy of the Merrill Memorial and voila! there it was! The link I had been searching for. The last entry in one of the Merrill lines written about matched perfectly with my oldest data. I was able to not only trace, but to document my entire line. Amazing bit of luck.
