Red face job market (esp. teaching) in Missouri (Columbia)

Hi everyone,

I'm considering moving to MO, specfically Columbia and wanted some input on the job market and the teacher job market in that area. However, I'm open to suggestion on other places that might be nice for someone my age (I'm 23).

I'm a Spanish/English HS teacher with two years of experience in Michigan and I'm looking for a change of scene to a state with a brighter future and economy.

I'm looking for a teaching position, and I would be moving with my boyfriend, who has a background in business, but lacks a B.A....

so, what would our prospects be? I'm leaving a VERY competitive job market with a huge unemployment rate and I'm looking to enter a climate that is quite a bit more user friendly.

Thank you so much for your help!

Hey JP, I live in Columbia and work in social services, I also consider Michigan's U.P. my "second home" since my family has a summer place on Lake Superior near Sault Ste. Marie.

The market for teachers is okay here. You should not have too difficult a time finding a job, but you need to get your application in NOW. If you wait until April/May, you will be competing with all the new grad's from the University. Columbia Public Schools' starting salary range is upper 20's to low 30's depending on your education and certifications.

The cost of living here is lower than most major metro areas. You didn't mention where in Michigan you're coming from, but we're definetely going to be less expensive than Detroit, Lansing, Grand Rapids etc, and probably pretty comprable to the cost of living in Holland or other small towns in SW Michigan, or the UP.

As for the unemployment situation here, we tend to run under the national average for unemployment, and there are opportunities for your husband in business too. Columbia's economy is based heavily on the University and two colleges in town, and secondarily on Healthcare since we have three large hospitals and several smaller specialty healthcare facilities. The third largest sector in this area is government and non-profit services, since we are a regional hub for those services. Jefferson City is also a short 1/2 hour commute and has some opportunity as well.

Good luck!

Ken
