I never said tornadoes don't do a lot of damage. They do. I said they are localized phenomena. They hit and and are usually gone in a few minutes.
I haven't meet a single person (yet) that has actually been through one, let alone seen one. I'm really interested in taking one of those tornado watching tours.
I have seen the damage . We drove through Oklahoma right after one went through. On one side of the interstate a farm (house, barn and other building were destroyed) there was a path about 50 yards wide of devastation and ton up turf. On the others side of the interstate a shopping center was destroyed and the merchandise was thrown all over the place.

I have been through 3, the last one I lay in a ditch, while watching my car slide from one side of US 61 to the other, the bank from the ditch saved us, pretty terrifying, the year was 1980, during the 4th of July tornado outbreak.
That said, I would rather face a tornado or flood than another hurricane, I have been through 5 of those. Next time one bears down on us, I am going to Missouri, just cant bear the thought of 12 hours of not knowing if the house is gonna fly away with us inside.

Hurricanes are not fun. I went through two mild ones on Long Island, and even in a major metro area, we were without power and water for over 2 weeks.

That's really unfortunate, there's plenty of folks on these boards who are cheerleaders for the state, and there's a few natives (some by way of Georgia) that try to discourge potential relocators..But what this and all the state boards lack is people who have moved, didin't like it and moved back or moved elsewhere. I think alot of people once they figure out they screwed up in moving just quit posting.......Cabool Bound are you out there anywhere???

Where you are and how you enjoy it is what you make of it. I learned this in the Air Force, travelling all over the world.
Missouri is not perfect. Nor is California. Nor is anywhere. Missouri does have its fair share of small-minded people, racism, obesity pollution, indifference, laziness, lack of education etc. Aren't these present in every state to varying extents?
Accentuate the positive - great parks, low cost of living (except for utilities), relative ease in getting around, decent food at fair prices, etc. Be positive and the energy will reciprocate.

Exactly. Between the places I've lived [4 in MO, 1 AL, 2 IN] and those I've spent fair amount of time touring, visiting, etc., that is correct... While I do not love IN, it is a good state, even those wind-swept relatively flat corn and soybean filled northern part. Good for bicycle riding, many festivals, good people & vittles, and so on... is it the Ozarks, the land that courses through my blood? No, but I see the positives, and enjoy my time here.
As to the items you mentioned - yea, they are unfortunately all over the country, and I can not say that one state is worse or better than another in those regards. Indiana, when first moved here in 2000, was terribly impressed with the lack of trash alongside roads, etc... but, past couple years its sadly degraded
As to the positive energy, totally agree - person that is sour, spoiled, and/or closed minded could be unhappy in Eden... lol, I absolutely love my visits to San Lois Potosi, Mexico - yet met a guy in the airport when returning the other day to the States, and he was sour about his experience. Different strokes, different folks I suppose.

We had 2 tornadoes come through this town since we moved here (about 12 years ago?). The first did more damage. I don't think either were deadly, though. I think the first was an F5 and the second was an F3.
Both the tornadoes were on the same month and day, exactly 2 years apart.

Missouri is a great place to call home. If you like the smaller town you might want to try the Lake of the Ozarks area, they have a great school district. If you like a medium size town (100,000-300,000) you might want to try Columbia or Springfield.
