St. Joseph and Platte City Rentals (Brentwood: apartments, chapel, buying a home)

In April, I will be accepting a job in Atchison, KS. I have been looking at places to live within commuting distance and am choosing between St. Joseph, Platte City and Leavenworth. We want to rent either a house or an apartment (prefer 3 bedroom, but will consider 2 bedroom) for a year before buying a home. I have searched through the classifieds in the online newspapers of these communities, consulted online sites comparing rental properties.

In general it appears that St. Joseph has more affordable housing. I thought I found the perfect place in Chapel Ridge Apartments. They advertised a 3 bedroom for $650. Unfortunately, that is a rate that we don't qualify for because we make too much. They do have a few apartments that do not have income requirements, but their 3 bedroom was (I can't remember the amount), but was more than $745 a month which is more than we can afford.

Anyway, I know that often times the best landlords and the best deals are only found through word of mouth. So, I am asking current and former residents of St. Joseph and Platte City to tell me about decent rental properties or landlords that they know of (or especially bad ones to avoid).

I have not lived there, but at one point I almost moved to St Joseph for my job, to the point where I looked at some apartments.

One place I remember that was decent was called Brentwood Apartments. They had 2 bedrooms under $600, and I think 3 bedrooms under $700. They were located east of the N Belt Hwy at the intersection with Beck Rd.

Another complex was called Broadmoor, and was just up the N Belt Hwy from Brentwood and east of the intersection with Gene Field Rd. They had reasonable rates too from what I recall.

Avoid Brittany Village Apartments. I have heard countless bad things about them.
