Maybe good to see from somewhere WARM! Actually October is usually pretty nice, it's November that it starts getting pretty raw (usually, again not always) I think the words are "varied and unpredictable".

Hey guys, you are making me drool, can't wait to get my own hands dirty! I am actually hoping for some whopper thunder and lightning storms, haven't seen one since I was a teen. We don't get them here.

You mean the kind where the flash knocks out the dusk-to-dawn lights, and the BOOM makes the dog leap from bed growling and the windows rattle? Then the satellite TV goes fuzzy and quits and 15 seconds later, the rain pounds down. We had one of those about 4 nights ago.

There's a book I bought when I first moved here called "Gardening in the Heartland"...you will be much happier if you choose tough, sturdy plants that are either native or built for the region! You can grow some of the less hardy if you're willing to pay attention and protect them at times, but it depends on whether you plan to be home all winter..........

Thanks for the tip Lake Junkie, I actually think I want as carefree plants as I can find for now. I will look for the book.

We have the perfect snowfall in Rolla today. It's a beautiful frosting of rooftops, porch railings and car tops and hoods. The temperature is up to 27 degrees. The birds are at the feeders and bath.

The streets are clear. So is the driveway. No shoveling. Just a brisk winter morning with a nice thin layer of snow in the yard and on the trees.

If you guys want a great trouble-free perennial that does great in Mo, I have 2 recs for you--bee balm (aka monarda) and phlox. The bee balm grows wild here, but the garden variety has scarlet blooms and it blooms for quite awhile. Phlox also grows wild here, and the garden variety gets about 4-5 feet high and blooms for a couple of months here. Both bloom in the summer. Also, for several years I had an onion garden (!), and it was beautiful b/c I put in chives, garlic, Egyptian onions, regular onions and anything else remotely related and it was really pretty. I called the leeks "poor man's drumstick alliums." All of them reseeded themselves, or at least came up again and again.
