It is my personal opinion that the crocuses are being a bit hasty in their appearance, as the venerated groundhog has said that we still have more winter ahead. Who are we to believe, the flora or the fauna?? Granted, the famous groundhog is NOT a Missouri native!

What crocuses?

Or is that just crocus? Please tell me the flowers are not blooming already! We got 4 inches of snow last night.

Perhaps it is croci? And yes, they are poking their heads through the ground, not bloomed yet. We got a light frost this AM so might not bloom yet.

Are you a gardener? I just bought a little house in northern Mo and will want to landscape. I am mostley interested in fruit trees and flowers. Any tips or suggestions?

moncheri,
I have an aunt that lives in Alaska and it may even be near Big Lake. I keep trying to get my dad to remember to get her addy for me but he forgets. She's moved and using the cell only now and they no longer have internet darn it so it's hard to get ahold of her.

I can't remember what's blooming in April, I've been gone for a couple years now but I assure you that as long as you plant zone appropriate the soil seems to be so awesome there and it's moist enough that everything is happy. The only thing we had any issue with when growing some things was the hail beating the plants up.

I had red bud trees, red twig dogwood, decorative pear ( I can't remember the name), lilac, rose of sharon, hardy hibiscus, loads of bulbs, oh man and this tree I can't remember the name of off the top of my head. It has heart shaped large leaves and flowers in the spring, followed by long pods. We had two of those. Hostas, one bed dedicated to large flowering annuals, roses, and a bunch more plants.

I'm really afraid to see my old yard, I put a lot of work and love into it and I hope the new buyer liked it. My passion is gardening.

Have you seen a magic lily? LOL we had those in the yard when we moved there. I had never seen one before and it took me a while to figure out what the heck that was.

We had snow here last night too (California) and looking to get more before the week end is over. I'm not complaining though cause my hubby is plowing snow making some money.

I absolutely loved everything about the weather but the threat of swirlies. I've been stuck in a dull winter to summer to winter weather pattern here in Ca. that I love the changes out there so much! I love rain and the clouds and lightening and the moister air and I don't mind snow and ice either because the winter seems so much shorter than what I am used to. One year I was there I had gorgeous roses blooming in November

I'm hoping to get there for a spring visit myself!

I was mistaken- Central Park is full of purple blooms. I do a little gardening. Northern MO gets quite a bit colder than here in SW MO so I'm not sure what all grows there. I have daylillies, irises, garden phlox, moonflowers, goblin flower and coreopsis as perennials and a rhododendron bush. We are in a sort of glitch in the growing zones here, kind of a micro climate. For instance, most years petunias will seed themselves and return. In April it is anyone's guess on weather. It has been in the high 80's before, but we have also had snow on Easter some years. And it could be rain, thunderstorms, tornado warnings or glorious warm sunshine. Your best bet is to dress in layers, and bring an umbrella and windbreaker. We have several apple and peach orchards around, but some years the buds get frostbitten and won't produce. Native pears, also. Forsythia, dogwoods, saucer magnolias, spirea, and a pink bush I can't remember should be in bloom in April. Really, everything will be getting started unless we have a very late ice storm.

Yes, firebll31 is correct about the variances from one year to the next when it comes to the weather here in Missouri. We live in the east central part of the state and some years our garden will reward us with some of the most beautiful blooms. Then the next year it is 4-6 weeks later before nature displays her splendor. I'm hoping for an early Spring. Just can hardly wait to feel the dirt between my fingers.

Oh, when I posted about 'playing' in the dirt, I should have mentioned that our newly adopted Lab mix has already chosen a few interesting spots for planting. She has already dug many holes for me!!! Of course some of these pre-dug holes are not quite what and where I have in mind this year. I was reminded of this preview by a very, very good friend.
