Almost all of them sell groceries nowadays.

The state is absolutly beautiful and the people are friendly.
People ask us "Why Missouri"? "there's nothing there" !
In an attempt to discourage people from following me there my response is usually "You are right nothing there". Just give me 30 years or more without the "Hoard" discovering Missouri. In the mean time I will be cattle farmin, fishin, huntin and toting a sidearm. HEAVEN ON EARTH !

My parents did the same thing at about your age. Moved from Kansas City to near Ava, Missouri, and then later moved over close to Seymour (around Mansfield). My dad grew up in Laclede County and wanted to go back down there and buy some land and raise cattle, and that's what they did. I see people now talking about homesteading, etc. I guess he was sort of ahead of his time with that. They paid cash for their farm (after selling their house) and then between Social Security (when they were eligible for it) and cattle and gardening, they were self sufficient. When it was time to pay taxes they'd sell a cow to pay the taxes. The had a wood stove, so no heating bill. No air conditioner for many years but those houses were built for no air conditioning - huge windows that go practically ceiling to floor and let a good breeze in. Later they did put in a window air conditioner. Now they have had to move from there for health reasons and that's sad because I know they'd rather still be down there.
Lots of Mennonites in that area. You will see them along the highways and roads with their horses and buggies.

many of the wal-marts in Sacramento are now supercenters with groceries.
I do miss jack in the box, although I can go to St Louis to get my ultimate cheeseburger. I miss Del Taco as well, and according to their website, they have some in St Louis as well, I haven't found one yet. Hardees isn't as good as Carls jr. either...
no in and outs, I'll live.
what I really miss is Nations. Mmmmm the bay area's only redeeming feature...
