Default Misery reaches out from California to Missouri

USA Today reports that "In California's meltdown, misery has a long reach." Although, it doesn't mention Missouri, the threat is still there just below the surface. Here's an excerpt:
In each of four years prior to June 2008, more people left California than moved in from other states, a reversal of a decades-long trend in which the state took in more than it lost.

I'm not too worried about our land prices going up. This state is pretty vast, and from, what I've seen, fairly rural in most places. It would take a lot of Californians settling in every part of the state for the average real estate price to go up I would think. I can understand your concern, but I'm not too worried about it.

From the posts I've read coming from ozarksboy, I'd guess it isn't just the possibility of price of real estate increase but just the fact that people who currently live in California might move there.

My wife and I likely being two of them as soon as we tie up some loose ends.

I would hope there's not a huge exodus of Kaleefornians descending on MO, however. If I wanted to live around and have my retirement society heavily influenced by left coasters I could simply stay put. I consider what's happened in Oregon, Washington, parts of North Carolina and other places to be egregious as people sold over-priced homes here then drove up housing prices in other states. Worse, they wanted local merchants and society to change to accomodate them rather than the other way around.

Memo To Self: Re-register car soonest to get rid of CA plates!

when we moved here, one of my trucks was days away from renewal. I figured I'd register it as soon as I got here. it took us five days to get here, as we took our time. I had done a change of address at the post office. when we got here, there was a reminder in our new mailbox (addressed to our new Missouri address - not re-tagged) reminding me that the tags were due, and I could leave it tagged with California if I wasn't planning on staying. yeah, no. I registered it here the next week.
(but I got registration mail here for a few years. )

Curmudgeon,
When I say stuff like that, I get chastised and castigated by folks from coast to coast--and even reprimanded by the board moderator.
When you say it, you probably get rep points.
Funny.
In fact, I think it's hilarious that every reader outside Missouri and half of those who live here think I'm awful for discouraging outsiders from moving here because I think most of them will be unhappy. YET most of you who want to move here would lock the door at the border behind you if you could for the reasons you just stated.

[Mocut- no personal advertising in posts please.

I've lived in eight states, several of them more than once, thanks to the military, and three foreign countries . Many moves were because of my father. Years later I joined in my own right. That has given me the opportunity to revisit, as an adult, many places I lived as a child and to return to some communities years after the last time I lived in and near them. I've watched them evolve; sometimes in stages.

This has taught me, first-hand, a lot about growth and development and the fact that neither is necessarily as good as some may portray them to be. Modernization may be inevitable and some growth is bound to occur but they don't have to destroy the soul and character of a community. They shouldn't be permitted to.

EXACTLY!! I don't want to limit people from coming here, in fact I encourage it to the right people.

and OzarksBoy is exactly right in that the way we live here would be miserable to folks that need to be told what to think, what to watch, what to wear, and need to have a starbucks every 200 ft. and they should be discouraged gently for their own sakes. some people would need to come see for themselves and could go either way after they experience our way of life.

You guys can add me to this list. I am hoping that a lot of people consider MO too rural and redneck for their tastes. A big plus is the large amount of public land in Missouri, i.e. there are roughly 20,000 acres of land near Ft. Wood that is all national forest.

That's a wonderful thing! It can never be developed and frankly it shouldn't since it's mostly ridges and hollows with about 2" of topsoil and tons of rocks.

My main concern at the moment is the 4.2 acres next to my 50. I really need to snap it up to prevent someone from moving in on my little bit of paradise.

Ozarks Boy
Hell, I'd throw away the key too.....

You read your article and it says the problems we have been talking about.. THe population of California is going up, not down, but it's due to illegal immigration and anchor babies, because as the article mentioned there are more people legaly leaving than coming...So Cali is losing it's good folks....
Ozark I think my be a little gruff at times but to move to Missouri then want to change it, to what you left from is ridiculous.... and I look around and more and more people here only care about themselves and no one else...Sad really
