I've spent some time in West Plains and I really like the community. I've never lived there, but I've done business there. It is definitely small town life. But I grew up in a small town so I can relate to it. As far as small, self-sufficient communities in this part of the world go, West Plains is a good one.

If you want to live in a small town in Missouri or the Ozarks, I don't think you can go wrong with West Plains. It has a lot to offer for it's size. I could be considered biased since I was born there, but I've looked over all the other towns of similar size in the Ozarks and none are as good as West Plains. There is a decent hospital, and many doctors, etc... There is a church on every corner. The schools are good, and it has a community college. It has become a regional trade area and draws people in from 70 miles. It has a good selection of shopping and restaurants. There are some good sized factories of successful large corporations. For it's size it has nice parks, libraries, and a good civic center. It has a good clean look and a nice historic downtown area. Two golf courses. The people are very friendly. You can drive 15 minutes and be in the national forest for hiking, hunting, or canoeing a crystal clear spring-fed river. Taxes are still low here and property values are very reasonable. You can drive across town in five minutes. I could go on. Other area towns to compare to Poplar Bluff, Missouri (awful and dirty) Lebanon, MO (sucks) Mountain Home, AR (Arkansas) Harrison, AR (Arkansas). Rolla, MO (boring) Springfield, MO (way too big) Branson, MO (tourist conglomerated mess) I think you'd like West Plains.

Cold Spring just about covered it! I lived near Willow Springs, before moving to PA. I liked it because I could still go to Springfield to do stuff, but it was much more rural, and still is near West Plains, Cabool and Willow Springs.
Also, I found my neighbors quite friendly!
