i think....
i dont think ozark boy is trying to stop people from moving to MO, nor does anyone else want to stop people from coming.
actually, OB was very helpfull to us when we asked questions about Rolla in regards to possiable move there(job offer)....he didnt berate me, try to change my mind, I actually felt welcomed......
maybe it was the idea that i was from the south and from the country, so there was a connection....or.....maybe cuz i didnt ask or worry about the nearest mall, starbucks, etc, i asked about quiet country living like i am used to and prefer, i asked about hiking, camping and best of all....fishing....my all time fav thing to do!!!!
OB and locals in any state realize we cant stop change, and we cant stop people from other places moving in on our little patch of dirt, but i think what OB means, as well as other locals in any state/town, is yes, do your research, go above and beyond the local walmart and tourist trap, notice the people, notice the "feel" of the area, check out the local buisnesses.
If you are coming from, lets say new york city or beverly hills for instance....ask yourself if you can "truly live happily" in a small town, or a town that doesnt have all your used to.
dont move somewhere differant and expect or get upset if there isnt a rodeo drive or macy parade, dont freak out after the fact when you cant get a large soy no fat, no taste add a splash of fake cup of joe, instead...learn to appreciate the cup of joe you can get at the mom and pops diner on the corner, and enjoy the good friends you will make while drinking it, the fun gossip you will hear, and the chat about nothen in general and everything imprtant you will hear.
This does not mean you have to change yourself in general, you can still love your designer shoes or your meatball grinders, but be open to flip flops from the five and dime and the open faced roast beef from local diner.
this doesnt mean you have to stop driving like the world is about to end, but take the time to appreciate who slower everyone else in your new area live, and ask yourself, "why dont i give it a try?", you might just find that you will be more relaxed, actually roll down your window for once and smell the roses growing in yards, with out fear of being held up at the redlight.
we all understand jobs take us to differant parts of the world, especially now, jobs are rare, and we need to go where the work is, but embrace your new area, dont go with a grudge, dont assume things like "im from the north, the south wont like me, and vice versa", take the time to smile, wave, when your in line at the market and you want fresher tomatoes, ask the person in front of you if they know where you can get some!!! you will be surprised how fast you will get info, and a smile back, even when they hear your not from there, they will be so glad to see that you want to do buisness with some local farmer, they will be glad to help.
this is how you fit in and adapt....if your sitten at the diner counter alone, and someone sits near, look over, smile, raise your cup, ask how there doing or say..."nice weather were haven today", eventually people will realize how friendly you are, and you will make friends better.
dont go somewhere and cold if your from somewhere hot and complain, we get it, its cold, but to go on and on sounds like whining, instead....save your voice for summer and then go on and on about how much you love the "cooler" summers then your used to and how glad you are to be there.
this is all common sense, we will learn to like your likes, as long as you make a effort to adapt to your new area, you can bring all the sushi rolls and grinders to the potluck you want, as long as you be sure to tell miss sally how good her pot of greens are or how good miss april's peach pie is, we in return will venture over and give that grinder a try and say..."wow, this is good...can i get the recipie???"
dont go somewhere and only thing you do is jump on city council about building a mall cuz you dont want to drive a hour to one, instead....go around and encourage townfolks to out flower pots in front of their stores and such tomake your NEW hometown the best it can be, that way you can also take pride in your new town, show folks that thou you like a good mall, you love your new town just as much.
so go ahead, move where you like, be it personal or for a job, but be ready to become a native of that place, and be proud of it, you might just find that you actually enjoy smiling alot more then frowning.

Excellent post SweetLady. Kudos to you to present such a balanced post and for sticking up for OB. He's plain spoken but very kind.

Complain about the weather, complain about the rocky soil, all you want. It's just when you start complaining about Missouri people that I get defensive--and become offensive.

That's pretty much my criteria too. Good post OB.

ty for rep and response, like i said, i just call them as i see them. i think if this approach when moving somewhere else was used more, this forum for example wouldnt be so full of tit4tat, meaning, there is no lemonaide if at first we dont squeeze some lemons, and ad a little sugar

Excelent points, among many others you made. Can't wait to do all you recommend and not do all that OB warns against.

Then that would just be the story of my life!
I'd be forced to plead senior moments.

I agree.
Mr. Ozarksboy has a different way of speaking than SweetLady. He may sound more abrasive, but he has been very kind to me (a Kalyforeigner of all things !), and he helped brighten a dark day when we were really struggling with my husband's lay-off at a job he loved for 12+ years, at a company he helped start.
