Fairly neat and clean in my opinion as well. Cities can be somewhat of an exception but by-and-large, local and county governments take trash disposal and collection seriously and make it easy for people to do it comfortably and recycle responsibly.

Speaking to the trash issue, as I have lived in 4 different states, all of them have areas that are more run down or trashy...and areas where there is more pride or money or whatever it takes to make people care.

I do remember as a child...back in the '60's...there was a huge marketing campaign (no idea who did it) about littering. We were encouraged at every turn NOT to be a "litter bug". I even remember the little bug on the "Don't Be A Litterbug" billboards. This was in Central/Northern California. My parents reinforced that message, and today I am absolutely unable to throw trash out the window of my car. Absolutely unable. Once in a while I see someone do that...it's still shocking to me.

I do not think there is more trash thrown around in Missouri than anywhere else, but wouldn't it be nice if there wasn't ANY!

I was a child in the '70s and '80s, but I remember the "Don't Be a Litter Bug" signs too. It is absolutely unthinkable for me to throw trash out the car window. There's been a few times I have tossed my gum out, but only after waiting until no other cars are driving by to see me doing it. That's not a good idea though because usually I don't fling it far enough and it just blows back and sticks to the side of the car. Actions do have consequences, right?

Texas has the best anti-littering slogan, "Don't Mess With Texas." It seems like it's now an unofficial state motto; it's on coffee mugs, tee-shirts, posters, etc.
