What? You're giving up those delicious gingerbread pancakes at Kerby Lane? The authentic Mexican food of Chuy's? You going to leave Sixth Street? You're passing up the chance to regularly visit Stevie's statue at Town Lake? You won't be able to go to Zilker Park on a whim.
And you're coming back to this mess?
Tsk, tsk, tsk.

Mummm, Kerby Lane does have some delicious pancakes. Spent some time in Austin I take it? I jog by that statue of Stevie at least once a week on the Town Lake hike/bike trail. Chuy's is way overrated...Trudy's is far better when it comes to Tex-Mex. I'll miss the BBQ more than anything else when it comes to food. And of course, there are the prolific numbers of gorgeous women here, which Texas seems to run a monopoly on compared to just about everywhere else I've been.
Sadly, the obligations of graduate school have kept me from enjoying Austin to its full potential. Maybe if I wasn't working every day of the week consistently I'd enjoy it here a bit more.

You can never do too much research when moving and always ask for the opinions of people that have moved into the area since they have an entirely different outlook more often than not. Want to move somewhere safe where you can leave your doors unlocked and not have to worry about your children? Try a time capsule and go back about 50 years in the midwest as we have lived from coast to coast and that is my best advice.

i never cared for austin, way to hot, not enough trees, and apart from areas of the downtown, which probably appeals more to the college folks, its just another suburban sea of strip malls and fast food joints, acres of parking lots, and box stores.
the other side of the coin you might say from the utopia you paint it to be. same can be done for most anyplace. just depends on what a person is looking for and is most important to them. ive always said its how you live rather than where you live, by that i mean in having a good life, friends, family, ya know stuff without a price tag.
as far as missouri is concerned. its missouree to some, missourah for others, and just plain misery for the rest. be very sure before you jump ship, hate to see you in a state of misery.

I like Austin for the most part. Outside of the central part of Austin, it could just as easily be Houston, Dallas, or any other city...very suburban and very bland. I think the town is waaaay overhyped, but not necessarily overrated. A lot or residents will look at you like you are crazy if you say anything negative about Austin ("What are you talking about, this place is PERFECT!"), which gets on my nerves a bit...it is no better or worse than anywhere else, and does have its ups and downs, again, just like everywhere else. I am glad I moved here though, it has cultured me quite a bit, expanded my horizons to a new range of experiences, and I've gotten a great eduction at UT. It was the right move for me at the right time, to the right place, and for the right reasons.
I'm actually from Missouri originally, have been living in Austin for 2 years (22 in Missouri before that). I know the state and all of its ins and outs very well. You are 100% right though, it depends on what someone is looking for and what is important to them. Living in Austin caused me to realize that what is important to me is in Missouri...so that is where I am heading. The job market in my field is rough here anyway, so even if I wanted to stay here I couldn't.

Amen, folks who want to move to Missouri. Listen to Todd who has found Missouri not to his liking. Chances are you won't like it either, so "be very sure before you jump ship" and come here.

You know, I never had a pressing urge out his way but the more he protests the more I wonder what I'm missing

Ya'll have fun picking on poor ole OB. His tactics may be a bit over the top but you have to admit he has some good points.
Misery isn't for everyone.
