Is Missouri more similar to Iowa or Arkansas?
You have the Ozarks in both Missouri and Arkansas, but Missouri and Iowa are both in the Midwest.

I do not think the measure of a civilization is how tall its buildings of concrete are,
But rather how well its people have learned to relate to their environment and fellow man.

You could also ask if Arkansas is more similar to Missouri or Mississippi...or Oklahoma... or Lousiana. We only have 5 very geologically distinct land regions in this state.

Isn't this something like asking whether California is more similar to Oregon or Arizona?

Overall, I'd say Missouri is more midwestern like Iowa. There is a strong southern influence in MO mainly south of the Missouri River. I sometimes fall into thinking that there isn't that big a difference until I go back to a small-town northern Arkansas, then I realize how stark the contrast is.

Plysically Iowa is mostly flat, rich loam suitable for farming; So is Illinoiis. Missouri is 1/2 Ozark Mountains with a lot of clay and hardpan soil. How mid-west Missouri is, depends upon the area you are in. The St. Louis Metropolitan Statistical Area (MSA) includes 8 Illinois Counties. Southwestern Missouri is the fourth of the four state corner area: Kansas, Oklhaoma, Arkansas and Missouri. Arkasas is the Natural State; Oklahoma is the Native State and Missouri iis the Snow-Me State. Each of the four states are very different. Each offers something unique to the visitor whether it is Turner Falls, Bridal Cave, Big Bertha or Frog Suck Park. .

There is definitely clay in both Iowa and Illinois as well. Brick and clay mining have always been big industries in the Midwest. Most Midwestern soils actually are clay soils. Ozark soil tends to be more rocky and shallow, but it can be used for farming if properly irrigated and emptied of rocks. Also, most of the St. Louis Metropolitan statiscal area's are more like those of Illinois. 3/4 of St. Louis County and all counties east and north of the Mississippi and north of the Missouri contain soil that is good for farming. Clay does not mean the soil is unfertile by any means. Overall, I don't really see much of a Southern culture leniency towards Arkansas except in that of the Mississippi. It should also be kept in mind that the Ozarks don't occupy anywhere near half of Arkansas or Oklahoma. So in this respect, I would say Missouri is more like Iowa.

Ya know, now that I think about it more, with the assistance of some liquid barley, it is very clear that Missouri is much more similar to, well:
Missouri and Iowa share an "i" and an "o" = total of 2 letters...
Missouri and Arkansas share two "s's" and a "r" = total of 3 letters...
Therefore, let it be known that Missouri is more similar to Arkansas, yet has many similarities to Iowa too.

But, but, the letter 'M' is closer to the letter 'I' than it is to the letter 'A'. Oh, darn, Both Missouri and Arkansas have a total of 8 letters. Back to the drawing board.
