I have farmed my whole life in this state. There are alot of things that make Missouri "Misery". $9 milk, feedin hay in August, 98 degrees and a 1000 small squares on the ground, or worse, the last 100 in the field and it starts to rain! (Good lord, I love my round bailer). Then there is ticks, seed ticks, chiggers and poison evy.
That's not plain talk, thats the truth.
You've stayed here, though, so I guess you're not TOO miserable.
It is and always will be Missouree. There is no 'uh' at the end. And just how do you pronounce: Arkansas? Ar kan sas? Nope, it be Ar kan saw. Don't y'all just love names???
Wow! I had no idea that so many people would flat out deny that Missourians say “Mizzuruh.” Almost like it's something to be ashamed of. I hear folks say “Mizzuruh” all the time--much more than I hear “Mizzoureee.” And I think the “Mizzuruh” pronounciation is kind of cool really. I happened to watch the Clint Eastwood movie Million Dollar Baby the other day, and they pronounced it “Mizzuruh.” What’s the big deal about it anyway?

It's a cultural marker. What's happening here is a mini-version of what happens between southerners and northerners. Someone from St. Louis hears "Mizzouruh" and thinks "hick." Someone from Springfield/Branson hears "Mizzouree" and thinks "snob." And there's some truth to both perceptions. I said SOME truth, which of course is a dangerous thing on which to base assumptions.
That said, I too thought it was strange to have some deny that ANYONE says "Mizzouruh." Maybe they don't know many people, or maybe they need to get out more.

I'm curious which part of the state you live in that the Mizzuruh pronounciation is so prevalent? And it's not a big deal, unless you claim the way I say it is wrong!. As far as movies go, we know THEY are always 100 percent accurate. I assure you, Jasper, MO as portrayed in the movie Roadhouse is a complete fabrication!

Uh.. it just sounds stupid? The 'billys who say "Missouruh" probably also say, "Coloraduh, Hawai-yuh, and Californee".

You hit it on the button, Cyrano. I always love your posts.

I suppose it might have to do with the fact that I am from STL, where no one says Missouruh, and my mothers people are from the Bootheel, where no one says that, either?
I am racking my brain, trying to remember if anyone ever said Missourah when we had our summer place down at the Lake of the Ozarks, but I was pretty little.
The snob/hick thing never entered my mind.
